GitHub for Windows targets enterprise devs

The GitHub hosting service for software development revision control has released its first official Windows client, a year after a similar client for Mac OS X came out.

The GitHub for Windows client, which was unveiled on Monday, works on XP, Vista, 7 and the pre-release version of Windows 8. It is written entirely in C# and comes with a complete installation of the msysGit development environment.

The client is also supported for all GitHub Enterprise installations running release 11.10.260 or higher, GitHub developer Tim Clem said in a blog post.

"Ever wish there was an easy way to get up and running with Git and GitHub on your Windows computer? Turned off by command line utilities and setting up SSH keys?" Clem posited. "GitHub for Windows is the easiest way to manage your repositories on GitHub.com."

GitHub is promising "a no-questions-asked install experience and silent, automated updates that install in the background", Clem wrote.

A 'clone in Windows' feature lets the user clone repositories from the app or from GitHub.com. Alternatively, business developers can also 'drag in' existing local GitHub Enterprise repositories.

Users can also browse and create commits, roll back or revert changes, and find, publish and merge branches.
