Google officially announces Nexus 5, available to order now

Summary: It was one of the worst kept secrets in mobile phone history, but now Google has made it official and announced the Nexus 5.

The Nexus 5 was one of the most leaked devices, including by Google themselves at the KitKat launch, and today the Nexus 5 is official.

Twitter went crazy with the 11 am Pacific release and given the order issues we saw with the Nexus 4 I quickly made my way over to the Google Play Store and ordered my own black 32GB model.

My order confirmation states that the Nexus 5 leaves the warehouse on 11/5/13 so it looks like I may not see it until next week. Then again, when I ordered it the page states leaves in 1 or 2 days.

The Nexus 5 is available in 16GB black and white models for $349 and in 32GB black and white models for $399.

It appears the black 16GB model is popular as it appears out of stock. The 32GB black model and white 16GB model no longer show in stock and instead have a shipping date of 8 November. It is likely all will be out of stock soon.

Specifications of the Nexus 5 include:

  • Android 4.4 (KitKat)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, 2.3 GHz processor
  • 4.95 inch 1920x1080 display (445 ppi) with Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 16/32 GB internal memory options
  • 2GB RAM
  • 2,300 mAh battery
  • Qi wireless charging
  • 8 megapixel rear camera with OIS
  • 1.3 megapixel front facing camera
  • Dimensions of 137.84 x 69.17 x 8.59 mm and 130 grams

I have had my HTC One for 7 months and am now going to soon see if the Nexus 5 is a device that can knock it out of my hands since nothing else has been able to do it.

I am a bit concerned about the battery capacity so hopefully KitKat helps out with that. The wireless charging, OIS camera, Snapdragon 800 and Android 4.4 have me quite excited though.

  • Yaaay!

32Gb! Finally a Nexus Phone with decent onboard storage capacity. Personally, I need 16 Gb for music alone, so if I can't add a microSD card, I start by subtracting 16Gb from the advertised storage capacity and evaluate the phone from there.
  • Nope

I'll wait until the Schmidt lead google shows that they can have a major hardware release and then I'll look at buying another Nexus device but, for now the Nexus 7 2013 FHD has left a bad taste in my mouth.
  • Google Nexus 5 vs HTC One

I would also choose Nexus 5 over HTC One, even though HTC One has more internal storage.
I´m really curious about Android KitKat and I think this might be the best Android phone so far.
  • Google underestimates demand

Google blew it again, as far as estimating demand for its phones.

It's unbelievable that it has basically sold out. Didn't Google learn from the Nexus 4, which also sold out within minutes, and then wasn't available for months? We seem to be going down the same path again.

And what does this mean for other OEMs? Every Nexus phone that flies off the shelf is one sale lost to other OEMs. Maybe those other OEMs should think about releasing pure Android, rather than changing the interface for the worst.

Samsung will be hurriedly trying to get its Tizen OS out into the wild.
    • Backlash

"Samsung will be hurriedly trying to get its Tizen OS out into the wild."

If Samsung intends to install it's own Tized OS on US phones, they will be in for an unpleasant surprise.

They would be wise to stick with Android.
  • Can't wait...

So I ordered mine at a quarter past 7 this morning!!
  • 16GB

is $473 on the Google Play Store, here in Germany, and they are expecting to leave the warehouse some time in January.
