Here's what's new in the iOS 6 GM seed

I bet that traffic to Apple's developer web portal is heavy.

Yesterday Apple released the Golden Master ("GM") version of iOS 6 to its registered developers so that they can test it for any last minute show stopper bugs before it gets publicly released on September 19. The GM build is 10A403 while the last developer build (beta 4) released on August 6 was build 10A5376e.

Unlike the four beta builds that preceeded it the GM isn't available as an Over The Air (OTA) download. It's only available as a binary download from Apple's developer portal and is quite large in size. The iPhone 4S package weighs in at 957MB while the iPad 3 bits are 1.15GB.

As per usual, Apple reserved a few new features for the GM that weren't in the previous developer builds (Tweeting and Facebook posts from Notification Center come to mind). It also includes a number of refinements and enhancements as expected.

Apple made some significant changes to the new Maps app in the GM, adding new flyovers for New York City and Rome and changed the flyover icon from the rather pedestrian looking "3D" characters to three shaded buildings (pictured).

AppleInsider has posted a nice roundup of the Maps improvements in GM including smoother borders around foliage and "leaf-level" detail. Rather than dealing with privacy issues presented by people and cars, Apple uses a slick algorithm that automatically removes cars and from its map flyovers. (Google blurs faces and license plates.)

This MacRumors forum thread is tracking other changes in the iOS 6 GM, including:

  • Wifi+Cellular Removed from settings
  • A few new wallpaper added since beta 4
  • Panorama mode added to the iPhone 4S in camera app
  • Many cities now supported in 3D on maps application
  • Option added to "About" to limit ad tracking
  • You can now have the first page of the springboard completely empty (All iOS Devices)

The corresponding Xcode 4.5 GM seed is now available as well.

  • "GM".....hmmmm,

Does Apple's use of the initials "GM" mean they now have
a patent on those initials, and General Motors is no longer
allowed to use them? Hehe...just a bit of humor folks,
    no need to go "thermonuclear"!
    • Re: "GM".....hmmmm,

They have been using the term “Golden Master” for a very long time. I can’t remember when I first heard it, but it was definitely used for the release of Macintosh System 7.0 in May 1991.

Happy days ... back when I cared about Apple ...
      • Yes, they have been using "Golden Master" for some time,

of course, other industries use the term "master" copy,
etc. It's just been in recent years that everyone seems
intent on filing some sort of patent claim for these common
        phrases, acronyms and letters.
  • Got the iOS 6 Beta

I've tried searching for google and luckily I got the iOS 6 beta here

  • iOS 6.... What a change!!!!

Why Apple do an happening for so little modification of iOS???

    - A few new wallpaper ... great... It is a great innovation for this new OS version...

I think, Apple, by looking its navel since 10 years, forget that now in 2012 the iOS users interface is completely ugly and obsolete... But it is probably better just to add some wallpaper an increment the iOS 5 to get iOS 6 to get a new OS version...

Do'h! Who could imagine in 2012 we have a Smartphone drived by a 60's Unix os yet.......
    • So Eric

What is your idea of a non-ugly obviously modern mobile OS?
    • Lol wut?

You do realize that this isn't a change log for the current iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 6 right? It's what's new from iOS 6 Beta 4 to iOS 6 final.

Beta 4 being the last beta before the Gold Master release there wouldn't be a lot of changes, as it was very nearly done. From iOS 5 to iOS 6 there are an ass ton of changes. See here:

As far as "derived by 60s Unix OS" you do realize Android is Linux based, meaning it to is based on that 60s OS. And 1960s Unix vs today is like comparing to Windows 1.0 to Windows 8.
  • I think I'm dating myself...

I think "Gold Master" came from the days of record companies would master make an gold an original record for a album for them press other masters from and then they those masters to make old vinyl records.
Similarly they use that for making CD, DVD & Blueray disc.
Nevertheless I would like to try those new features on my iPhone.
