How to make money online with YouTube: a comprehensive guide

Looking to make a little money on the Internet? Why not give YouTube a try? You don't have to strike it lucky or go viral to earn money with YouTube, but if you do happen to fall into such luck, there's quite a hefty pot of money to earn from. This is all thanks to companies who pay to advertise through YouTube (which is owned by Google, for those of you who were unaware).

In this post, I'm going to give you ideas for making videos that can earn you some real cash on YouTube, as well as give you some pro tips regarding the best practices for making the most of the videos you upload. Whether you're just an individual looking to make a bit of money on the side, or a business looking to monetize promotional videos, there's something for everyone in this post. Don't expect to break the bank -- I'm not promising riches and wealth beyond your wildest dreams -- but if you're looking for a legitimate way to actually make money online, this could be the article you've been waiting for!

Some stats from yours truly

First, let's start with some stats from a few of my videos. I want to show you that while I'm not making money hand-over-fist, I'm certainly making enough to put a smile on my face. Now, don't be too hasty to draw conclusions from these figures, because there are a number of factors to take into consideration with how videos earn and perform. I'll cover those factors in the next section, but for the moment, here are two of my better-performing videos, which, for what they are, is pretty astounding that I'm even earning anything! I'm not naming the specific videos, because I'm not quite sure at the moment if that would violate Google's ToS. Either way, here are the stats:

As you can see up front, there is no blanket statement for saying "X amount of traffic guarantees X amount of dollars." It just doesn't work like that, unfortunately. To further prove the point, here's some stats from a video of mine that has fairly terrible ad revenue performance:

Rough, right? Depending on who you ask, that $0.50 might be the first thing someone has ever earned online, and that's truly something to be excited about; however, judging by the numbers themselves, those earnings are pitiful. Regardless, I just wanted to give you a feel for how widely performance can vary, but the potential to really earn money is certainly there. Up next, I'll dig into why performance varies so much and what you can do to put the odds of better performance in your favor. Later, I'll go into exactly what you need to do to get set up to start making money with YouTube.

    great job, Stephen. It's so true, that video is an enormous medium. two my fav things, most new tv's being sold can go online, meaning we are being watched in people's living rooms and the other fact that YT is the #3 search engine on the net.   • YouTube is the best!

    I failed for a couple years and spent countless hours researching and trying to find out how to make it on YouTube.

    I bought every eBook and guide and nothing helped.

    I was about to give up, but I found a new guide that is written by someone who is actually famous on YouTube (The only guide out there that's legit).

    All the other books were written by scammers who were just trying to make a buck and had no YouTube success themselves.

    After I read it the 1st week I got almost 200,000 views and 300 new subscribers. You really can't find the info he has in there anywhere else on the web and it actually works.

  • Don't forget the chances for supplementary income outside of YouTube

    One thing I've seen successful YouTubers doing is creating a website outside of YouTube. This is a fantastic way to engage with your customers and sell them supplementary goods or services (for example, merchandise relating to your channel). Phil DeFranco and Toby Turner do this really well and promote it without seeming too pushy.

    http://www.bislr.com/ has an app that instantly creates a website based on your YouTube channel and also comes with a web store and many other apps to create a successful online business. I'd recommended checking it out if you're producing high quality YouTube content but can't seem to turn it into a steady cash flow.

    Many people start a business on the Internet and wait a long time before they start to earn money online.

  • What if your rejected by AdSense?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the informative article, but I do have a question. I've had a YouTube channel for awhile. I only have 8 or 9 videos uploaded, most of them are travel videos and animal footage shot at various zoos. I followed your steps to monetize my videos and then applied for an AdSense account. Just a few minutes ago I received an email from them stating: "Thank you for your interest in Google AdSense. After reviewing your application, our specialists have found that it does not meet our program criteria. Therefore, we are unable to accept you into our program."

    Does that mean that there is no way for me to earn revenue on my now monetized videos? I checked one of my videos and it now has an ad attached to it. So how do I earn money if Google AdSense has rejected my application? It seems that unless I go back and undo the monetization on my videos, they will be getting free advertising off of my content.

    Thanks for any help you can give me.

    also consider that you should do take in account to ensure that you get paid on time.
    5 steps what google says that you should have to get your earnings to your pocket:

    1. check your address
    2. Provide tax information, if you have one
    3. payment method, including checks, Electronic Funds Transfer, and Western Union Quick Cash.
    4. verify phone and address, if you dont this, your account will be suspended until you verify and no ads will appear.
    5. Earn enough to reach a limit, so google will sent out the payment as requested

    Google also says, that it has full rights to verify your earnings. You can track your earnings if you are familiar with adsense account page. You have to wait for google to update the finalised earnings.

    Great article about making money on youtube Stephen. Some real golden nuggets her. I only found out about the Youtube keyword tool a few weeks ago and whilst I have used it I have not tried the url search aspect but will do that today and see what turns up!
