HP upgrades mission-critical service portfolio
Hewlett-Packard announced Monday upgrades to its HP-UX operating system and new Itanium-based NonStop servers. Additionally, HP rolled out enhancements to its Integrity-based CloudSystem Matrix with HP-UX, designed for cloud and IaaS environments running mission-critical workloads.
The upgrades are all part of the tech giant's Project Odyssey, a venture formed two years ago which the company said sets out to redefine the future of mission-critical computing.
Among the upgrades to the Unix-based HP-UX 11i v3 operating system is a common theme — reducing downtime. HP said enhancements will enable organizations to upgrade virtualized applications between Integrity i2 and i4 servers with no downtime, reduce reboot times by up to 50 percent with Soft Reboot, and reconfigure virtualized I/O with no system downtime.
Meanwhile, the CloudSystem Matrix with HP-UX upgrade includes tools to improve efficiency and service level agreement (SLA) performance, such as larger and lower cost private cloud deployments, and increased data center processing capacity through the identification of inefficient servers.
HP also is rolling out two new NonStop servers for small and midsize enterprises (SMEs). Both servers are fault-tolerant systems powered by Intel's Itanium 9500 chips, which HP said results in a 50 percent increase in the main memory capacity. The servers are expected to come in at around the $100,000 price point.
