IDC: Tablet shipments sluggish, but bright spot lies in enterprise

Market research firm IDC released its second quarter tablet report Thursday, with analysts affirming that the days of astronomical year-over-year growth of tablet shipments are over, with the latest estimates coming in at a forecast of just 11 percent. While that's still a double-digit growth figure, it's a far cry from the 52 percent growth the tablet industry enjoyed just a year ago. 

Apple clocked in at the top of the list for total tablet shipments despite an overall decline, with 13.3 million units shipped in the second quarter. Apple archrival Samsung managed to hold on to its second place position, even as its market share slipped to 17.2 percent.

Lenovo, on the other hand, saw positive movement between quarters, surpassing ASUS and moving into the third spot in the tablet market with 2.4 million units shipped. The top five was rounded out by ASUS and Acer, with 4.6 percent and 2.0 percent share, respectively.

It seems the more smartphone screens grow in size, the more tablet forecasts take a nosedive. According to IDC tablet research director Jean Philippe Bouchard, the tablet market is still being impacted by the rise of large-screen smartphones, as well as longer-than-anticipated ownership cycles.

But the bright spot here could be the enterprise, as Bouchard said the recent Apple/IBM partnership will boost tablet usage with more enterprise-specific offerings.

We believe that stronger commercial demand for tablets in the second half of 2014 will help the market grow and that we will see more enterprise-specific offerings, as illustrated by the Apple and IBM partnership, come to market.

  • Without consumers tablets are dead

    If tablets replaced desktops in the enterprise we would all need cortisone shots for our carpel tunnel. Work would be torture using a small tablet all day. Desktops are way better for all day computing. yes - I just stated the obvious.

      Is far more useful than any laptop.

      If an 11 inch tablet under 1 pound with multi screen is available, is far more useful than any laptop. Go test drive a Galaxy Tab/Note pro with a keyboard, and you'll understand.

      Problem is, when in comes to tablets I only use vanilla Android, Samsung has so much low quality bloatware, that they are simply not an option at all.

        An 11 inch tablet screen - really? Thats aweful, with the amount of computer work I do all day you would have to double it to 22 inch, and dual monitors as well. The only time I would use a tablet/laptop is when I am out of the office.

          are not tablets, but duo 22 inches monitors? ;-)
          The thing is it depends of the utilization - tablets will find its way in a lot of use cases - for consumers and enterprises. I think software makers (at least many of them) are being slow building apps for enterprise scenarios, but I'm sure it's inevitable.
  • It would be interesting to know what the product mix looks like

    I have a theory that we've seen a big jump in relatively inexpensive Android tablets, which for most people are good enough to be that "couch surfing appliance" that most people use tablets for.

    Lenovo for instance has some higher end tablets, and some really cheap ones, and they've seen a huge bump... I'd love to know what their product mix looks like.
  • Apple is still playing an important role

    I think sales balance will keep on shifting to android and with cheaper prices growth can stay in the 2 digits field for the following couple of years.
    I doubt enterprise market will be a big push in the 2nd half of the year and Apple sales are not going to skyrocket with or without the IBM deal - iPads are going the same way iPhones and Macs - highly profitable devices with a share around 10%.

    No surprise as people are still trying to find a user for tablets. It was a fad to own one and then when people did they didn't know what to do with it.
    • Chances are that, most people who got caught up with the tablet frenzy,

      already have one, and thus, the growth spiral has disappeared.

      Growth will be minimal, if any at all.

      The Apple/IBM deal is a last gasp attempt by Apple to become relevant with the enterprise players, but, with the Surface devices becoming the much better options for businesses, chances are that Apple will just remain a curiosity with enterprise players.
