Introduction

Apple has updated its iMac lineup with a new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display, which takes the crown as the ultimate iMac.

Let's take a look at what makes this tick.

The Display

As the name suggests, the new iMac with Retina 5K display is built around a 5K display. This 27-inch panel has a resolution of 5,120 by 2,880, the world's highest resolution display.

That's a total of 14.7 million pixels.

The Display Technology

In order to come out with a 5K panel that is only 5m thin, Apple had to go back to the drawing board and come up with solutions to problems.

For example, it had to develop a timing controller – also called a TCON – that could handle the 14.7 million pixels, and use a high-precision oxide TFT technology to enable the pixels to not only change fast enough, but deliver consistent and uniform brightness from corner to corner.

Inside the iMac with Retina 5K display

Think the display is impressive? The system specs are equally striking.

Inside the new iMac with Retina 5K display is Intel's new fourth-generation Core processors, with the lineup starting with the 3.5GHz Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz), and going up to the 4.0GHz Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz).

The new iMacs also feature AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, with an option to upgrade to AMD Radeon R9 M295X with 4GB of GDDR5 memory.

The systems also start with 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, and can be upgraded to 32GB as an option. Storage ranges from a 1TB Fusion drive to 1TB of PCE-e flash storage.
