Indonesia's Telkom partners Intel to grow subscribers

Indonesia state-owned telco Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) has tied up with chip giant Intel to increase the number of its broadband subscribers

Under the agreement, Intel-powered computers--including notebooks and laptops--will be bundled with Telkom's Internet packages called Speedy at a specially discounted price, according to a report Saturday by Jakarta Post. The partnership also allows both sides to tap into each other's network of distributors, retailers and customers.

This is part of Telkom's plans to help it reach 20 million users by end-2015. It currently has 2.3 million users, and aims to hit 5 million by year-end, noted the news daily.

According to Telkom president director Arief Yahya, customers who purchase Intel-powered devices will get broadband fee discounts of up to 97.5 percent.

Arief added the price cuts were justified because the operator was "investing in future customers and the person who invests in the future wins the game".

The Telkom executive pointed out computer prices needed to drop further in order to grow ownership and connectivity.

"If computer prices remain between US$200 and $400, we could only increase broadband subscription by 1 million," he said.

To achieve the target, Telkom will also leverage partnerships with other major IT players such as Cisco and IBM, according to the report.

Indonesia is increase broadband penetration from 5 percent this year to 30 percent by 2015--equivalent to approximately 20 million subscriptions.
