LinkedIn surpasses 300 million users, wants 3.3 billion

LinkedIn's product chief recently told a group of recruiter and marketing customers that the social network is approaching its "mobile moment," and that moment is going to be here sooner rather than later.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company announced on Friday morning that its user base has ballooned to more than 300 million people across more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

In the United States alone, LinkedIn now retains over 100 million members. That means approximately 67 percent of the rest of the user base is made up of international followers.

LinkedIn further boasted that it added more than 23 million members since December 31, 2013.

But 300 million is not nearly enough for LinkedIn as the professional social network sets its eyes on the entire global workforce.

Yes, that means LinkedIn wants to eventually grow to encompass a profile for every employee, tallying up to approximately 3.3 billion right now.

Deep Nishar, senior vice president of products and user experience at LinkedIn, explained further in a blog post how mobile is going to get LinkedIn to its target:

We know mobile is critical. Later this year, we are going to hit our mobile moment, where mobile accounts for more than 50 percent of all global traffic. Already, our members in dozens of locations including Costa Rica, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, use LinkedIn more on their mobile devices than on their desktop computers. Every day we see an average of 15 million profile views, 1.45 million job views and 44,000 job applications in over 200 countries through mobile.

All in all, Nishar also reiterated how expansion within these markets (as well as China, in particular) plays into LinkedIn's previously announced ambitions to establish a "global economic graph."

  • LinkedIn is an endless source of amusement to me.

    I love to scan the jobs that get posted on LinkedIn, which supposedly some company or another is looking for someone like me to fill. So, if you can code a program that will invent the cure for cancer, while building the world's first cold fusion reactor, not to mention negotiating world peace for all political and religious factions while simultaneously providing 24 x 7 support to all six of the global data centers, then you're what they're looking for. All others, don't bother applying. Oh, and I almost forgot - you have to be able to do this for less than ten percent of what the CIO is making, and divorce your wife and relinquish custody of your children, because there will be no place in your life for them anymore.

    HAHAHAHAHA. Are they mental 3.3 billion. That's even more than Facebook, by a factor of 3. They basically said they want everyone on the internet to use their service. An insane goal.
