Block Financial Corp. is preparing for a December release of the 1997 edition of Kiplinger's TaxCut Multimedia Edition. The tax-preparation package will include free online filing services and other improvements.

Users of Kiplinger's TaxCut will be able to file Internal Revenue Service 1040 forms free of charge, sending them via a secure modem connection. Up-to-date tax information will be available to users on the company's Web site.

The package will include online help files that reflect changes made to the tax code during the previous year. These will be incorporated in the program's Live Auditor, a function that alerts users to potential pitfalls - actions that could trigger an IRS audit - as forms are being filled out.

Rapid Find is a new engine that will search forms, data and worksheets for specific terms. The new version will also include user-definable password protection for sensitive documents, an optional interview procedure to determine what forms are needed (this feature will take new tax laws into consideration), and a W-4 estimating function that will automatically determine the number of allowances and create a new W-4 to send to employers.

Kiplinger's TaxCut, which will cost $39.95, will allow users to import data from previous year's editions of TaxCut, as well as Intuit Inc.'s TurboTax and Quicken packages.
