Blog site shut down after potential al-Qaeda links surface

Greg Sandoval CNET News | July 19, 2010 11:08 AM PDT

Summary

Blogetery.com was shut down after FBI agents informed Burst.net executives that links to al-Qaeda materials were found on Blogetery's servers.

Bogetery.com was shut down after FBI agents informed executives of its Web hosting company, Burst.net, late on July 9 that links to al-Qaeda materials were found on Blogetery's servers, according to Joe Marr, chief technology officer for Burst.net.

But Marr said a Burst.net employee erred in telling Blogetery's operator and members of the media that the FBI had ordered it to terminate Blogetery's service. He said Burst.net did that on its own.

Marr said that the FBI contacted them with a request for voluntary emergency disclosure of information, a letter bringing to their attention that terrorist material that presented a threat to the lives of Americans was found on a server they hosted. FBI agents said they wanted specific information about the people who posted the material immediately.
