Google said today it's invested in a project called the Atlantic Wind Connection, an effort to create a 350-mile power transmission backbone linking wind turbines several miles offshore with sites along the United States East Coast.

The underwater cable, "a superhighway for clean energy" in Google's words, is designed to link multiple offshore wind farms to the U.S. power grid. The wind farms, which are separate from the backbone project, would be located 10 to 15 miles offshore so they would have strong wind and would be invisible from shore. Construction costs of the backbone project are estimated to be $5 billion, according to a story in The New York Times.

The backbone would have the capacity to deliver 6,000 megawatts of power, enough for 1.9 million households, Google said in its Atlantic Wind Connection announcement. Google has been active in many energy projects, for example by sponsoring research, offering home energy-use monitors, and advocating for smart-grid technology.

    Smart decision. Alternate sources of energy is the future and Google is heading the right direction.

      @abc123a

      Agreed. But those alternate sources are NOT windmills and solar panels.

    Yet another reason to wean myself of anything Google. Gonna be hard giving up Android...

    How about investing in water turbines along the Mississippi and other waterways? "Farms" of little watermills on the bottom of the river, spinning and cranking out power 24 hours a day. Don't hear much about that anymore...

  • Nice one Google - hurricance / storm fodder...

    All you greenies don't get it yet, do you? 'Green' tech is vulnerable tech. Plonking large propellors in the middle of the ocean where treacherous storms, salt corrosion and terrorists can get easy access - what a joke! And kms of solar panels - pulease - cloud = no power, 1 decent storm = massive loss of panels & huge cost to fix. And let's not forget that all this 'green power' is being subsidised by the globalist-aligned socialist governments in the new Left West. So we poor schmucks pay more for our electricity, thinking that we are 'saving the planet'. What a crock. The world's got less than 50 years left in it anyway, and there's more than enough fossil fuel for that time. In fact, the truth is that there is hundreds of years of fossil fuels left, with more being discovered all the time. But that's an inconvenient truth, isn't High Priest Al? Indeed, Uncle Al wants to impoverish us AND control us - 2 socialist evils for the price of one: nice one... NOT.

  • please please use my land as a test site.

    hey ,, there are alot of things that can go wrong with new technologies,,, the first and formost is you llbean ems kyaking sissys that just sit home with nothing better to do than to rais a fuss,,,,, we got atoms spliting in our back yards and your woried about a big damn pinwheel progect... for fs sake shut up and let us do something to move forward.... no mater what idea we come up with you dont want it in your yard,, you dont want to see it,, you dont want to worry about it ,, but you still want its power... shut the f up already and let the world move forward with the safe renuable energy....... and i have to say,,, if you have ever seen the sunset behind a working wind mill... its absolutely breathtaking..... shut the hell up you miserable do nothing but argue princesses... you want a cure than argue about the same fucking cure......... hope you dont feel the pinch while you drive your fn humveee to the rallie..... douchbagsss...

    someone has something to say about every possible cure... there are people that hold very lucrative carrears and yes,, you may have found i dont spell well.. so piss off.... just read it.... there is someone to argue every side and we all want the same thing,,, more less expensive power,,, if you would alow solar panels and wind farms to be put up there would be more jobs,,, there would be more money,, they need up keep and the kids comming out of school would have something to look forward to... your constant arguing is holding up the whole process and what is left... no jobs,, no money.. wtf,,, are we just going to be a camping venue to the world..... probly have to bring your own synthetic heating material to your campsite because we dont want you to cut down our ,,,, grows faster than you know forests...... damnit man,,, lets move on,,,,, you can grow crops around a solar panel,, you can power the water pumps to irrigate those crops... you can also prop up a wind mill that could power every building on that 200 acre plot and rid the economy of those energy hogging farmers that we so desperately need at this point,,,,.. what the heck is wrong with you people.... we have the factories and foundrys to build this equipment on our american land.... damn man,,, cant you see,,, we were industrial giants once.. the foot print is still here ,,, you drive by it every day and advert your eyes.... open the damn factories.. put us back to work... how hard could that be ,,, if we boom up as the alternative energy front runners.... shit man......... take the right stand.. or shut the heck up......

  • naibeeru, you just promoted taking about 800 people out of the work force.

    naibeeru, yes,,, this technology needs upkeep. and i bet you wont be there for it so your opinion means virtually nothing. you are just a voice not a force.. there are people dying in line to work on progects that people like you are holding up... i bet you have sea breeze coctails with your friends talking about this ,, your friends that is,, that will also not show up to build the new world,, but sit in the shadows and badmouth what ever the popular crowd is talking about, grow a spine and support the UNITED STATES , or please keep that week ass shit to yourself.... im sure your up in arms about saving the planet and probly have a free tibet sticker on your suv,,, ive seen you... you pompass ass,,, you want cheep power , but no threat to the environment, you oppose nuke power, but dont want coal, your a tree hugger but shop at ikea.... you buy high grade gas because you can afford it.... and you have the time to put that dumb comment on here and not actually do one positive thing to save the environment.... so sweet heart.. hush.. and let the new clean world take hold..............

  • im sorry,, i thought this was a more read venue..

    not a bunch of stop by and b**** do nothing representatives. there are grant programs that pay billions to sink old war ships and other junk we produce to create artificial coral reefs off every coast on the planet... do you think if we build, 50 or 1,000 windmills off the coast,, its not going to have the same effect.... life will form around the footings,,, small life at first... this will attract larger prey,, larger fish,, shadows,, currents,,, eddies,,,, all fish live in this invironment,,, your not going to push life out.. your going to attract it in....... i am just beside myself wondering what you nay sayers have to say that is productive rather than hear your read it from some one who said it from someone blsh blah blah.... lets move on this people..... our kids depend on this..... we cant be a planet of debaters........ and exist at the same time..

  • oh,,, and,,,

    did you know ,, that because of 911 we in boston are scared to death of big fuel ships docking near the city so built a huge line from the city way out to sea so that ships could unload miles and miles out to sea,,,,, what if that fails..... natural gas or oil pours into the sea.... yup.. there is nothing we can do that is zero risk. you think the power to your ipad came from a fn genie in a bottle and your so energy savy .... scoff.... really ... you could go online and find a battery system you could link to your excersize bike with gyros to power said battery bank to charge your lap top or ipad... and then i might have more patients for you... really,,, hippys and groovers of all kinds are pulling this off at concerts around the country as we speak. mit kids have figured out the 100 mpg carburator... did you know you can pedal a bike for twenty minutes and make enough power to blend all the fruit and ice for the most fantastic organic localy grown daquri you have ever had.................... i bet you didnt...... but you can.... excersize your overweight kids for a few minutes to charge your damn itouch and then get back to me....
