ICANN approves .xxx domain name for porn sites

Lance Whitney CNET News | June 25, 2010 2:24 PM PDT

Summary

Porn sites may soon be able to tag themselves with a .xxx address now that ICANN has given the new domain name its initial OK.

Porn sites may soon be able to tag themselves with a .xxx address now that ICANN has given the new domain name its initial OK.

After denying several requests over the years for a new .xxx top-level domain, ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) finally relented Friday by giving the new domain its conditional approval.

ICM Registry, which would manage and sell the new domain name to porn sites, has waged a long struggle to get .xxx accepted by ICANN as a top-level domain, only to get a thumb's down at each turn. ICM's Chairman Stuart Lawley has consistently touted the .xxx domain as a way to segregate and safely filter out adult entertainment sites. However, conservative groups have in the past lobbied Washington and reportedly pressured ICANN to deny the request.

I dont think they should have a choice. all Porn should be on a .xxx domain no matter what. Children are more important than what loser democrats think about fairplay. Content filters do not work. any slip of the keyboard can potentially end up on a porn site. If you are over 18 then who cares what you look at but until then i dont want my children to see that stuff and a .xxx domain makes it very simple. No other arguments even make since. If you have a pron site on a .com then it should automatically be switched over free of charge. pron sites dont make money from children who dont have money so i should be alowed to decide what they see on my computer or smart phone. I do draw the line with isp's telling me what i can access. I pay the bill and its up to me to police myself. What i do in my own home is my business.

Just a waste of cyberspace, I don't think we need that TLD. Porn is doing just fine on a .com

@malcarada
and how do you define the 'waste of cyberspace'?
xxx to com is like rating movies for the intended audience.

Porn is doing just fine on a .com? To who? Not to the millions on the Internet that can't easily block their content. Now we can! You must be a spammer to support such a comment!

I have yet to hear an excuse that makes sense from the opponents.

You just need to listen..

@Linux Geek Its not the duty of ICANN to essentially set up a "filtering" system. The only way this will work with out infringing on free speech will be if they leave this as an OPTION not a requirement. Once they start making adult entertainment sites go under the xxx TLD - its a slippery slope.

@JT82

Free speech? Why would any court agree with that? No one said they have to stop.
no porn site is going to use this and you cant force them to use it. well besides of course trying to grab all the WANTED DOMAINS sex.xxx etc....
Just part of the over dumbness of the internet. porn runs the internet....

@James T. Kirk == "Captain Kirk" calling someone an idiot.
I pay $2000/yr for a filter that stops our employees from surfing porn. If all the adult sites were under .xxx I could just create one firewall rule to block them all and save us money and trouble.

and yes... bspurloc is an idiot. He should keep his politics to himself.
@ed@... you're so busy namecalling that you are missing the point. It is because of the "simple filtering" that will keep most porn sites from using the .xxx. Why would they cut into their own wallets by making the filtering easier? They may ADD domains in the .xxx, but I doubt any will "switch".

The problem with this .xxx business is, how do you define "porn"? Some people are so hung up about anything the least bit sexual, they'll want to label a picture of a girl in a bathing suit to be pornography. For years, this has been one of my favorite standing jokes: What's the difference between erotic and pornographic? If it turns ME on, its erotic. If it turns somebody else on, its pornographic.

I supported the idea of a porn domain over 10 years ago. The IP should be required to make it an opt in, not an opt out. Stiff penalties should apply to anyone posting porn to any other domain. Countries not enforcing this should be cut off from the US Internet.

Sounds 'logical', but...

What makes anyone think that all the existing porn site operators are going to run out and buy all new domain names and immediately switch over to .xxx? If they know it will be easier to block them will they do it? Will they want to spend the time and money to switch over?
