The New South Wales Department of Housing is on the hunt for a new chief information officer after Dr Vladas Leonas left his post at the end of August.

Leonas was appointed to the position after technology head Doug Falconer left the department in 2006.

He originally stepped into the breach as a fill-in for Falconer before taking it on in a permanent capacity.

Department of Housing told ZDNet Australia in a statement that Leonas left "to pursue other opportunities within the IT industry".

Executive director of Corporate Finance and IT, Michael Kuenzle, will be acting in the role until a permanent replacement can be installed.
