"Four more years." A short enough message, but one that has set Twitter's record for the most new tweets-per-second record, reaching 327,000 a second at its peak.

The message was sent from U.S. President Obama's Twitter account at 4.16am GMT, once Obama's re-election to the White House for another four years became certain.

According to Twitter's Government account, the 2012 election campaign resulted in one hundred million votes -- and 31 million tweets related to the battle between President Obama and Govenor Mitt Romney.

At the time of writing, the re-election message has been retweeted over 520,000 times. On Facebook, the same sentiment -- and accompanying picture of him and his wife Michelle Obama -- has reached almost 2.2 million 'likes'.

According to VentureBeat, the new tweets-per-second record has beat the previous record of 116,000 when pop group the Spice Girls set in their reunion concert, and the previous record was 80,000, set by Usain Bolt's gold medal within the London 2012 Olympics.

In addition, other political leaders around the globe -- including U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard took to the communication platform to offer their congratulations.
