Give the Vulcan live long and prosper sign

Here are 20 basic items that every geek should be able to do (items 15 – 20 are for the advanced geeks). How many items can you check off this list? (Hint: If you read my TechRepublic post 10 things every geek should know, you'll have an advantage.) The Geekend blog features this gallery in list format.

1. Every geek should be able to give the Vulcan "Live long and prosper" hand signal from Star Trek.
You can let your team know how you feel by giving them the "live long and prosper" gesture at every event with this foam finger.

10/15. Technically 10.5 because I suffered through watching the LOTR movies and after doing so could never bring myself to read the books. Three movies about walking. Even the trees walked in those movies. The good thing about this list is that it gives me destinations to go to, like the arcade museum.

Mispelled title

If you're going to recommend a book for us, as in #14, you should spell the title correctly.
Is correcting other people's spelling and grammar geeky, or merely annoying?

@kidtree Merely annoying, as no one learns how to spell correctly in school these days.

14.5/15! Who's ********!!!
aryu.limitless@... 14th Aug 2010
I am the kind of guy who read a metric tonne of Clarke and Asimov in high school. I went on vacation, and continue to do so, to a loving little convention called MetroCon nearly every year (the last 2 years, including this one, either my fiancee or I were at hospital). The only things I could not "do" were to Read (J.R.R. Tolkien) & Watch (Peter Jackson) LOTR series {*sniff* I could technically score 0.5 points on this one!!! I ONLY read them...}. I have a tee shirt that states: "If Pac-Man influenced us as kids, we wouldn't be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music." I wear it a bit more than I carry my cellphone... LOL

You stated 20 items with the last 5 being for advanced geekdom ... there are only 15 listed here ... does noticing that make me a geek?

"If you're a fan of World of Warcraft, you should consider joining Technologia, TechRepublic's unofficial official guild in the WoW."

Umm, no. I like tech sites for tech - but I hate them outside of tech. They pretty much get everything else wrong, and I'm sure there'd be plenty of clashes over non-tech stuff.

That, plus they're not on my server.

14 of 15? Oh, good, I think you are higher than me even if I count the additional 5. Of course, if you know where the three words that release the book of the dead were first spoken by Michael Rennie, give yourself 5 extra points 'cause you been a geek since before they knew what we were.

@Putertechn
ok let me test this out, i'm only 23 so bare with me. If I am correct, the three words you are talking about are the same three words from evil dead, klatu barata necto, but i believe they were first said in the day the earth stood still. Am i even close?

I need 3 and 5 to complete the list.

As far as number 7 goes I have even read The Silmarillion and watched the animated The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings/The Return of the King.

the advanced ones:

Name the primary characters of all five Star Trek series. If you need to brush up, go to the series listing on StarTrek.com (a CBS site).
i only know a smattering from the original, the next gen, voyager and enterprise, im sooo sad happy
Know the three words you must recite in order to retrieve The Book of the Dead. For help with this answer, go to the IMDb page of Army of Darkness memorable quotes.
klattu baratta necto, or for those of you who are bruce cambell fans, klattu barata nehfmhfmfhfm
Know how and when to implement the Konami Code. If you don?t know what the Konami Code is without looking it up, then you probably don?t possess this skill yet.
UUDDLRLRBABASTART at the title screen of at least every 8 bit konami game ever made
Know at least one way to kill a Dalek. Dr. Who fans have the advantage here. If you haven?t watched Dr. Who, you can read up on how to kill a Dalek.
i knew this then i forgot, not cool sad
Say ?I love you? in binary. Here?s a link that might help with your binary conversion.
which form of binary, ascii, BCD, simple binary numeric between 1 and 26?
