Lenovo announced it is joining the netbook parade with its new IdeaPad S10 netbook PC. The S10 is powered by the Intel Atom chip and comes with a 10.2-inch screen. It weighs just over two pounds and is about an inch thick.

The Lenovo netbook will come in two versions--one with 512 MB of memory and an 80 GB hard drive and the other with twice the memory and twice the hard drive capacity.

The IdeaPad S10 is expected to debut in October. The cheaper model will cost $399.

And not available until October? Lenovo was always at the top of my list for ultralight notebooks (3lb and less). Maybe they are so slow in this market because of the way it's going to cannibalize the ultralight market. If you can get a solid state drive at netbook prices, who's going to pay $2K for an ultralight?

Netbook PC

Hot! Load this neat little widget with Ubu 8 and it would run like a bandit. Kewl machine.
I think it is great. It makes the small laptop market more competitive. I currently have the Asus E series 12 gb notebook. Since I have the Asus I want to use it more than I had originally planned. I am looking for something small but economical to store a lot of music.
With prices this low, Microsoft has to cut the cost of an os or these little books will lead the public to MASS introduction of Linux. Rock on Torvald!

The other obvious change is that upgrading older laptops has become uneconomic.

I want one! I'm looking right now at the EEEPC 1000 and the Lenovo is basically the same. But where is it?

I LOVE my daughters EEE 4G. It's the perfect size for cafe computing, throw and go. Linux kicks butt on this little thing.

I got Suse on everything else already, with lot's of people asking me for alternatives to M$ stuff. They are tired of the BS of "infections by regular use" and NOBODY likes Visturd or Genuine Disadvantage!

"One Key Rescue" says it's not Linux. Only fools would invest in Vista on this box. Same investor would be foolish to put out bucks for an obsolete OS like XP. Then I'm a little sour on Microsoft since their OOXML bullying.

So - if it comes with Linux fully configured for a "less than Windows" price - sans Microsoft Tax - let me know and I'll consider it. If it's available without an Intel chip - I'll order the puppy!

But then I'd wish for a Linux Open BIOS. That day is very close!

What happened to the Trackpoint?

That's one of the things I like best about my old Thinkpad...

No flash option?

Without the option for a non-mechanical drive, I think this is just a cheap (though not excessively), lightweight laptop.

Further, while not mentioned, I don't see a Linux option, which is a requirement of mine for no-nonsense, "Just Works" netbooks. Maitaining Windows is just too much of a hassle on small machines like this.
