Gallery: Storage on the go
The Road Warrior needs storage that's lightweight, has sturdy construction and is convenient - and that would make a great present this holiday season according to ZDNet's Robin Harris.
From thumb drives to online personal cloud storage here are some small pieces of gear that could make life on the road a little bit easier.
This 16GB Corsair thumb drive is big enough for thousands of Word docs or a couple of feature length movies. And it can survive a washing machine.
This LaCie Rugged USB disk drive has a silicone bumper and internal shock mounting to survive a tough trip.
LaCie's Little Disk holds 320GB of storage space. It works on FireWire 400 & 800 and USB 2.0.
Road Warrors need about 100-120 GB of space on an SSD drive that will start up your system in 1/4 to 1/2 of the time it takes a regular hard drive.
An Intel SSD drive.
Another option is a hybrid SSD drive/hard drive. The Seagate Momentus XT includes a 4 GB SSD that speeds startup while the disk offers capacities up to 500GB.
Simply adding memory - upgrading to 4GB RAM can really help performance.
You can now have your personal cloud. Run an Ethernet cable from the Pogoplug to your home router, install a bit of software on your main machine, and you can backup your choice of folders to the USB drive.
On the road you can access any of the folders from any browser by logging into MyPogoplug.com and downloading whatever you need.
