The Definitive Facebook Lockdown Guide - Securing your account settings (Sept. 2011)

Where you should be: Account settings > Notifications tab.

From here, you can change how and when you are notified about things happening on Facebook, when you are using the site or when you are not. These include notifications from groups, applications and other Facebook features.

1. Scroll down and select Edit. From here, you can see a selection of check boxes to determine whether an email should be sent or not reminding you of that notification.

Simply go through and select when you want to be notified by email or not. If you have a mobile phone set up, you may also have a text message notification column enabled.

2. To change email settings for groups that you are part of, select Change email settings for individual groups.

So .. please, try to pardon my (apparently) unfamiliarity with Facebook. For altho' I'd felt certain that I was quite familiar with Facebook - for your screenshots above, clearly indicate that I haven't been, afterall. <br><br>Be that as it may, I am unable to find and 'see' the same or similar pages that you display [here] in your screenshots!! <br><br>* Is it possible that the FB (account/privacy settings 'pages') will/can 'appear' drastically different, depending upon which operating system is being used on ones' computer ??

Good stuff, pointed out several things that I had missed. I detest Facebook, and have an account only to keep in touch with a small number of family members who are difficult to reach by other means. About every 90 days I think about dropping out, but after applying some of these tips, I'm no longer as paranoid.

Here's one more tip for users of Google's Chrome browser: install the "Facebook disconnect" extension: "Facebook Disconnect blocks all traffic from third-party sites to Facebook servers, but still lets you access Facebook itself."

Afraid of facebook? you do use e-mail right? that's no more secure than a postcard floating around. Heads up people, nothing is secure, and you can be caught blindsided at any moment by anything. Btw, you stand the biggest chance of dying today just falling in the shower, closely followed by falling down some stairs. fear facebook ffffttttt ridiculous.

In Guide 2, picture 2, #2: "Login notifications alert you when you or others log into your account. Recommended setting is to turn this on. Ensure you set up Facebook Mobile (later in this gallery) too to ensure you get text messages."

This is all fine and dandy, unless you clear your cookies after each session. At which point, you will have to jump through hoops each time you log in. Incredibly annoying! (also if you access a computer from a public location, such as a library)

Most people that are truly concerned about their computer's security will clear cookies.

  @blackroseheart -Re setting up mobile. All fine and dandy - except that France (where I live) is not in the country list!! Ah well. The population is only 85 million ........

I think the confusion here is that rather than click on "Profile", you need to click on "account" then "Account settings" to get to this screen shot.

I have repeatedly unchecked the box on the mobile option screen which allows sharing of my mobile number. Each time I exit the screen and go back, the box is checked again (sharing it turned back on). I even deleted my mobile number and went through the process of adding it again, making sure that box was unchecked from the beginning. It was automatically checked again. Any suggestions? I like the security features of linking my mobile number with my FB account but don't want people to have access to the number.

Hey Zack. You might note that some countries are not listed in the "Country" list for Mobile setup. Like France!!! No problems for mobile security on FB for anyone living in France then ........
