Aberle (right) had been executive vice president at Qualcomm. With the move, Qualcomm rounds out its executive team. Mollenkopf was reportedly in the running for the CEO gig at Microsoft, but Qualcomm quickly named him chief.

Qualcomm said that Aberle will oversee the mobile chip maker's global expansion and business units. Aberle has been at Qualcomm for 13 years and led the company's licensing business.

Last week, Mollenkopf officially took over for Paul E. Jacobs, who moved to become executive chairman.

According to analysts, Qualcomm is well positioned even when you consider that the smartphone and tablet markets are near saturated.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said in a recent note that Qualcomm is likely to benefit from Apple's iPhone 5s penetration at China Mobile. The biggest threat to Qualcomm could come from MediaTek from below, but tight integration with components puts off any real competition until late 2015.

At Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm demonstrated its latest LTE technology and noted that the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Grand 2 use the company's Snapdragon processor.
