Samsung is not the only provider of touchscreen display for Apple's new iPad, a source tells Reuters that LG Display is also one of the suppliers.

In a report Wednesday, Reuters cited a person close to the matter who said: "LG is also in a panel supply deal with Samsung for the new iPad." The source declined to be named.

The newswire's report follows an article by BusinessWeek in which an iSuppli analyst said Samsung was the sole provider for Apple's new display because LG Display and Sharp were not able to meet Cupertino's requirement.

An LG spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by ZDNet Asia.

Announced last Thursday, the new iPad includes a touchscreen panel with "retina display" which which delivers four times the number of pixels of the iPad 2, according to Apple. The iPad will be launched outside of the United States on Friday with Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore among the Asia-Pacific countries included in the initial launch.

Prior to the launch of the device, reports in Jun. 2011 noted that Samsung and LG were competing to provide display panels for Apple.

Apple and Samsung have been in court battles over allegations that the other party had violated patents around each of their own smartphone and tablets. Cupertino is said to be looking to decrease its reliance on Samsung.
