For the purpose of the report, TechRepublic defined SMBs as companies with fewer than 500 employees. Technologies highlighted include:

  • Big Data
  • Mobile computing
  • Flash storage
  • Virtualization
  • Social media
  • Cloud
  • Blade servers

Some of the results were surprising as information was gained about technologies the survey revealed respondents either already have, or will be implementing. This includes server virtualization and mobile computing. Both have definitely hit their stride in the last few years. The survey revealed that 88 percent of SMBs are either using or planning to implement mobile computing, while 74 percent of SMBs are either using or planning to implement server virtualization.

Another hot technology is collaboration software, which is being used to organize projects while remaining transparent to end users. Collaboration software has been a big splash throughout all businesses, including SMBs, in the past few years. The survey showed that 74 percent of 116 respondents said they are using collaboration software to provide one repository for employees, departments and teams, and 55 percent like it because it provides transparency among employees and teams.

Overall, the survey gives insight into what SMBs are looking at in current and future technologies, and the reasons companies are using a particular technology, or the reasons why they’re not using it.
