The rumor mill has been working overtime on a new flagship Samsung smartphone for some time, and now it appears a supplier in the UK has accidentally leaked the specifications and name of the new device.

As spotted by The Inquirer, smartphone retailer Mobilefun is letting consumers pre-order the new device, dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

If you're in the United Kingdom, you can pre-order an unlocked device for £549 ($923). At the time of writing, the webpage is live, and says the 32GB smartphone has a "metallic finish" and one color option is black.

While there is no mention of a release date, the smartphone retailer says the handset will use Samsung's own octa-core Exynos processor, Google's Android 4.4.2 Kitkat operating system, a 12MP camera with autofocus and fingerprint scanner. The rumored specs are summarized below:

  • Octa-core Exynos 5 processor
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Bright 4.7" Super AMOLED display, 1280 x 720 pixels (320 ppi pixel density)
  • 4G capabilities
  • 32GB storage
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, EDR, LE, Micro USB, GPS
  • Camera: 12MP with superfast autofocus, LED flash, video and secondary 2.1MP camera

According to the site, Samsung has made headway with the Galaxy camera, and the Alpha will be able to capture images in approximately 0.3/s. In addition, the Alpha includes selective focus features, editing, and realtime HDR viewing.

While Mobilefun did not include an image of the new handset, SamMobile -- a reliable source of Samsung information -- says that the Alpha will be formally announced on Monday or 13 August, and will be available in both black and white.

  • Wow !

That pricing reminds me of the cutting edge Nokia phone days early 2000s when people would pay a lot for a phone with new features/specs/software. Not sure how many people will shell out $923 for that phone (specs are good, but still running Kitkat so more info on differentiation features would be necessary for me to even THINK about that much money).

  • Is this really their new flagship?

There is nothing in those specs which tells me that it's any better than the Galaxy S5. Isn't 1280x720 a step down in screen resolution from their current flagship? Since when is "4G capabilities" considered a feature? The only thing that seems like it might be improved is the camera, but even that isn't clear from these details. The only thing that makes it sound like a flagship product is the price.

  • What, no 19" 10800p screen?

Until the Galaxy is so big that I need a backpack to carry it, I'll pass.
