SingTel has introduced Singapore's first prepaid mobile plan that allows subscribers to access Facebook based on a daily, weekly, or monthly flat fee.
In a statement released Wednesday, the telco's vice president of consumer marketing, Johan Buse, said: "Many of our customers are avid Facebook users who frequently access the site via their smartphones and tablets. The plan we launched today enables our prepaid customers to get their Facebook fix without worrying about incurring additional data charges."
Subscribers can choose from a 1-day prepaid plan of S$0.50, or 7-day for S$3, or a S$6 monthly plan. The service supports various platforms including Android, Windows, BlackBerry, and iOS, as well as mobile devices that run the Java-based Facebook app.
M.J Choi, the social networking company's Southeast Asian head, added: “Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. We're delighted that with this plan, SingTel prepaid subscribers can enjoy virtually unlimited access to Facebook at a very affordable price."
Asia is the site's largest and fastest-growing region, accounting for over 340 million active monthly users. Facebook has 3.1 million monthly and 2.1 million daily users in Singapore, making up 60 percent and about 40 percent, respectively, of the country's population. Mobile has been raking in the dollars for the company, which global revenue comprise 41 percent from mobile advertising, an increase of 30 percent quarter-on-quarter.
SingTel in August 2013 began offering WhatsApp services at similar prepaid plans of S$0.50 a day or S$6 per month. Rival carrier, StarHub, in November followed suit by announcing its deal with WeChat at prepaid plans of S$0.40 a day or S$6 a month. While marketed as "unlimited" access, both telcos capped data usage for their services at 1GB a day.
