  • Tweetium for Windows 8.1 review

I use Twitter in my work and one Twitter app or another is open all day on whatever device I am using. I wasn't pleased with any Twitter apps on Windows 8.1, but that's changed with Tweetium.

Tweetium is Twitter done right, with a pleasing display, nice UI, and great timeline streaming. It handles portrait use on my Transformer Book T100 tablet well, and the landscape display shows lots of tweets at once. A nice bonus, Tweetium works well in snap view making it a good app to have running alongside the browser for opening links in tweets.

There are a number of themes to show tweets in a customizable way, from black themes to colorful ones. Whatever theme you choose, images embedded in tweets show up in the timeline as they should (which can be turned off in settings). Tapping an image opens it in a window that can be zoomed by touch. Unlike other apps, you have to tap a little arrow button to go back to the timeline instead of tapping anywhere. That's something I hope they change in future versions.

Tweetium only shows one timeline at a time, even in landscape. You switch between the common timelines, mentions, messages, lists, etc., by tapping the column header at the top of the display. It would be nice to be able to swipe left or right to switch columns in portrait, perhaps that can be implemented in the future. Swiping on the column headers could be implemented in landscape, too.

The app is controlled well by touch with nice, smooth scrolling. Tapping the active column header jumps to the top of that timeline. Tapping a tweet opens a conversation view that also must be closed by tapping the little arrow button.

Searching can be done from a bar at the top of the screen. Searches return both tweets and usernames that contain the search term.

Tweetium is $2.99 in the Microsoft Store. I rarely recommend apps but Tweetium is so good that Windows 8.1 users, especially heavy Twitter users, should get this app right away. It's one of the best apps for Windows 8.1, and as good as any Twitter app on any mobile platform.

    Pros:

    • Great use of display in any orientation

    • Works well in snap view

    • Nice touch interface

    Cons:

    • Can't swipe between timelines

    • Must hit small arrow button to close popups

Reviewer rating: 9 out of 10

Additional screen shots are on the following pages.

  • Tweetium for Windows 8.1 (Black theme)

Tweetium has a number of themes that can be selected in the app settings. This is one of the nicest black themes.

  • Tweetium for Windows 8.1 (portrait display)

Tweetium makes great use of the display no matter the orientation as demonstrated in this portrait screen shot.

  • Nice review but missed some important information...

Does it have a good Live Tile? Thats the only missing thing with MetroTwit as of now.
Does it use the Share charm?

And last: When doing a Review of a Windows 8 app it would be very much appreciated if you provided a link to it! :-)

    • Hi there

Hi! I'm the developer of Tweetium, and wanted to let you know that yes, there is a Live Tile. However, the app does not yet have a push notification server, so when the app is not running the tile will not be as immediately up-to-date as the official app (especially on battery), and there are no "toast" notifications. However! Push and notifications *are* coming soon! For now I actually keep the official app installed just for th

Tweetium does support the Share charm, both for sharing tweets and links from the app, and for sharing links, text, and images from other apps.

I also wanted to share that there is an active UserVoice page where I've been receiving and responding to a lot of feedback. http://bsidesoftware.uservoice.com Please check it out! One thing you'll find there is that multiple account support and Tweetmarker are currently the top requests. Both of those are coming very soon (the former, early next week).

Oh, and lastly, you can follow @TweetiumWindows for the latest on the app. I do hope you'll check it out and share your feedback!

      • Whoops

Managed to hit submit while adding a sentence there and I don't see a way to edit posts. That first paragraph should have ended with "I actually keep the official app installed just for the alerts." The one thing I think it's quite good at ;-)

      • Cool

Its always cool to hear from the devs of an app or software. You guys are the foundation of the tech industry and you don't get enough credit.

        Code on!

  • Yes

It does do a live tile and there are not one but two links to the app in the review.

    • Thanks

Sorry i missed the link. But big thanks for the Live Tile info. That will probably make me go and try the app out. As there is no demo, this knowledge was crucial for even concidering to try it.

  • How about a Windows Phone 8 Version?

Great for my Sony VAIO Duo but how about my Lumia 1520?

  • You missed something

This article fails to have a prominent 'View as one page' link at the beginning of the article.

This is a serious deficiency. It is not something that one would want to start a new year with. Just like a 'first impression', you only get one chance at that.

Please don't let it happen again.

Yes, I will Blog and Social Network this.
