Twitter goes down, and then rebounds

Summary: Twitter went down Tuesday afternoon for almost an hour. Error messages said the site was down for maintenance.

Well, that was annoying.

Twitter, the popular short conversation social network site, went down at approximately 2 pm EDT on Tuesday. By 3 pm, the service seemed, for the most part, to be back up.

While early error messages asserted that the site was down for maintenance that could not have been the case in the middle of a business day. There has been some speculation that the problem was caused by a change earlier in the day on the Twitter client from naming the "Connect" tab to "Notifications."

By 2:30 pm EDT, a Twitter spokesperson told ZDNet that, "Most users are experiencing issues accessing Twitter on web and mobile apps," and that the company was "looking into it."

The outage's real cause, according to Twitter:

"During a planned deploy in one of our core services, we experienced unexpected complications that made Twitter unavailable for many users starting at 11:01 am. We rolled back the change as soon as we identified the issue and began a controlled recovery to ensure stability of other parts of the service. The site was fully recovered by 11:47 am PDT."

Users around the world are now reporting that Twitter seems to be working again. However, some services still seem to be in trouble. For example, there continue to be reports that user profiles can't be reached.

Additionally, there are reports that some third-party applications, such as some third party clients, such as Hootsuite and Twitterfall, are still having trouble accessing the service. It's expected that these problems will disappear as the service returns to normal.

Twitter ($TWTR) on the New York Stock Exchange in mid-afternoon trading dipped by 1 percent, but recovered following the site's return.

  • What's Twitter?

    • Good question...

seems to be a place for twits to post their opinions\thoughts in the belief that anyone else gives a f**k - a bit like an on-line graffiti wall, but much less attractive to look at....
