Apple's 'new iPhones for old' scheme comes to the UK

Summary: Apple is offering iPhone owners up to £175 off a new model if they turn in their unwanted handset.

Apple's trade-in programme has arrived in the UK.

"iPhones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores in the UK are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling. In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone," Apple said in a statement.

The company is offering those that want to shuck off their old iPhones up to £175 off a newer model if they sign up to a mobile network in store, be it to a SIM-only, monthly or pay-as-you-go plan.

The actual trade-in value consumers see on their soon-to-be-ex-iPhone depends on which iteration it is, as well as its condition — whether it has water damage and so on.

The 'new iPhones for old' service is available at all 37 of Apple's UK retail stores, and is expected to be rolled out more widely in Europe later this year.

The iPhone trade in scheme, part of Apple's Reuse and Recycling Programme, was launched in the US earlier this year. The programme encourages existing iPhone owners to upgrade their handsets by offering those returning old devices to Apple stores a discount on later models.

Just give me a good reason to get rid of my iPhone 5

    There isn't one !
  • Apple being cheap again

Depending on the phone you can probably get a better deal by recycling your phone. a iPhone 5 16Gb on Mazuma will get you £240, and that's cash in your pocket.
  • A thought to ponder!

Is Apple i phones any better than Samsung galaxy? It has a larger window, but difficult to insert into the pocket of a shirt or trouser is the only shortcoming with Samsung.
