Understanding cybercrime (video seminar)

Summary: ZDNet government columnist David Gewirtz delivers a guest lecture to the University of New Hampshire School of Law in Concord, NH. You can attend this seminar by watching the embedded video.

TOPICS: Security

Last week, I had the opportunity to conduct a Q&A session with a class at the University of New Hampshire School of Law about cybercrime.

These future lawyers were trying to understand the technical nature of how cybercrime works, who commits these crimes, and how people the world over are affected by digital attacks and theft.

What follows is that discussion. Of note, to those of you following my Skype Studio project, this the first use of a new sound system (which I'll detail in a later article). I think it's a major improvement over previous interviews.

Thanks to UNH for hosting me, and good luck to its students. And now, the seminar...

  • Good lecture

That's a great lecture for anyone to hear. I'd like to hear more for advanced home users on what to do to protect themselves outside of keeping the AV and system up to date with patches. I have a router with a built-in firewall, but who knows how good it really is. I really liked Zone Alarms built in notification to let me know anytime a program was attempting to do outbound communications, but I don't use it anymore and Symantec doesn't appear to have that type of capability.
  • Do I get an "A"

I watched the lecture. Do I get an "A" too?
