The owner of popular free Web log (blog) directory blo.gs has announced its sale to Yahoo for an undisclosed sum.

"As of right now, give or take a few minutes, Yahoo! is running blo.gs," wrote the directory's owner Jim Winstead Junior on his own blog yesterday. Blo.gs claims to track nearly nine million blogs for 12,000 users. The site allows its users to track new entries on and create lists of their favourite blogs, as well as providing several other blog-related tools.

"This is the sort of good home that i was looking for -- Yahoo obviously has the resources to run and improve blo.gs in pace with the incredible growth of blogs," said Winstead of the Internet giant.

The former owner said Yahoo shared some of his vision for the future of the service and users would not notice many changes under the new ownership.

"The service will continue to be completely open," he said.

Winstead was careful to stipulate that data collected from registered users such as names, e-mail addresses, IP addresses and lists of blogs would be used in accordance with the directory's existing privacy policy.

However, Winstead warned users data collected by sites owned by Yahoo and external to blo.gs would be used under the terms of Yahoo's own privacy policy.

A spokesperson from Yahoo was not immediately available to comment on the sale or the company's intentions for the site.
