Brits decide to spend the apocalypse in Southern France, Turkey

If the world was coming to an end, where would you prefer to spend your last few days on planet Earth?

According to etravelblackboard, if you're British, an escape from dreary December weather is top priority.

The doomsday prediction of the Mayans -- despite NASA's assurances otherwise -- has led to the idea that on December 21, 2012, the world as we know it will come to an end.

You may want to hold off on the Christmas shop and go sunbathing instead then, right?

Skyscanner's search data says so. According to the firm, there has been a huge surge in one-way flight searches ahead of December 21, with most British fliers seeking out haunts in the south of France or on the west coast of Turkey.

Flight searches have increased 42 percent for one-way flights to the south of France, whereas the Turkish province of Izmir has witnessed a jump of 30 percent ahead of the "apocalypse."

However, not everyone is convinced. Through December, the highest volume of flight searches were based on traveling on or after December 22 2012.

Ewan Gray, Skyscanner's regional director of Asia Pacific commented:

"We were amazed at the large increase in searches for flights to the South of France and to Izmir in Turkey leading up to the 21st December: the date of the Mayan Prophecy. Regardless of this auspicious date, the day after has seen the highest number of flight searches all year for flights suggesting that not everyone is convinced by this the end of the world theory."
