Cisco is teaming up with a Canadian utility company on demand-response technologies and energy management applications that could reach about 640,000 customers throughout Alberta.

Through its deal with Enmax, the two will work on projects related to building energy management, data center readiness and renewable energy optimization. One big focus will be on ensuring system security and reliability for smart grid deployments. Another will be on management of distributed energy sources, as well as a pilot with the Cisco Network Building Mediator product.

Enmax was the first retailer in Canada to offer energy produced through wind-generation projects and other alternative energy technology research and development.
