According to various accounts, it was a massive gathering of between 30,000 and 40,000 people.

The mainstream print media was advised (euphemism for "do it or else") to play down the issue. And comply they did.

Look at these reports by The Star and the New Straits Times. Hardly representative of what actually took place.
