Intel considering sale of security arm formed from McAfee acquisition

Intel Security could sell to a group of private equity firms for more than $7.7 billion.

Intel is exploring options to sell Intel Security, reports the Financial Times, as the company has spoken with several bankers to find a new home for the cyber security division.

Intel Security formed after Intel's acquisition of antivirus software maker McAfee in 2010, but as Intel looks to shift away from personal computing it helped found, some divisions may be cut from the technology giant.

Financial Times speculates a group of private equity firms could come together to make the Intel Security acquisition, possibly higher than the $7.7 billion Intel originally paid for McAfee, six years ago.

Intel announced in April it's cutting 12,000 jobs to focus on making chips for data centers and Internet of Things devices.

In a similar deal, private equity firm Bain Capital sold Blue Coat Security to Symantec earlier this month for $4.65 billion.
