A senior executive behind Intel's network management push today poured cold water on McAfee's announcement that it plans to buy Network General, a specialist in network management and security.

Dan Eichenberger, business unit manager at Intel's management system operation, said that businesses were resistant to buying all-in-one management solutions from a single source.

"Our strategy is to partner with helpdesk companies. They say: 'You do problem resolution better than we do, so let's work together'. That's proving to be very effective. There are many customers who don't trust, don't believe they can get everything from one vendor. There's a single point of failure, there's no leverage. Customers are looking for flexibility and integration."
