Samsung Galaxy S8 reportedly features all-screen front, virtual home button
Samsung is planning to release an all-screen front on the Galaxy S8 when it lands next year, according to Bloomberg. For the first time in the Galaxy lineup, Samsung will reportedly also do away with the physical home button.
Samsung needs a hit after its disastrous Galaxy Note 7 recall. Bloomberg said the OLED bezel-less display will allow for more screen real estate for viewing, and if released in March as expected, it could land on the market before Apple's rumored OLED iPhone.
Underneath the Galaxy S8's screen, Samsung is said to house a virtual home button -- likely to help with the screen real estate.
Voice commands are at the focus of the Galaxy S8, as Samsung is revamping its digital assistant, thanks to its acquisition of Viv Labs in October.
Bloomberg reported the screen sizes for the Galaxy S8 line will be similar to the 5.1-inch S7 and 5.5-inch S7 Edge.
Depending on the region, some of the handsets will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chips, while others will feature Samsung's own Exynos chip. It has reportedly scrapped plans for a dual camera, citing manufacturing costs.
SamMobile reported on Tuesday the Galaxy S8 won't feature a headphone port. It will instead rely on USB-C and Bluetooth for connectivity. The rumor blog also said an optical fingerprint scanner will be included.
The Galaxy S8 is said to launch in March. However, testing could delay it.
Samsung isn't commenting, of course.
