Announced in July, Apple’s new 27-inch LED Cinema Display ($999, Apple Store) is now shipping to customers. Orders placed at Apple's online store (starting on September 18) were given a ship date of “1-2 weeks" and are already reaching customers. Classic Apple under-promise and over-deliver.

Early impressions and photos are being posted in the MacRumors forums. User bluesteel compared it to the discontinued 30-inch Apple Cinema display:

i liked the aspect ratio of the 30". it seems like it was a lot bigger, well at least a little wider and a lot taller. but with the 27 my neck doesn't hurt from having to tilt it up when using the 30". i also liked the matte display of the 30" so much better than this 27's glossy look. there is a little glare, especially from the shiny black bezel, sort of distracting actually. other than that, i like the 27's cable setup. its a lot less clutter...i'm glad the 30's power brick is gone.

The new 27-inch LED Cinema Display features:

  • 2560 x 1440 resolution
  • 178-degree viewing angle
  • built-in MagSafe charger
  • three rear-mounted USB 2.0 ports
  • iSight camera
  • microphone
  • 49-watt, 2.1 speaker system
  • Mini DisplayPort connector

After originally being give a ship date of October 7:
I was pleasantly surprised to see that upgraded to September 28 -- and I couldn't be happier.
After previously opting for less-expensive Dell monitors (I purchased the 24-inch Dell 2405FPW in 2006 for $760) I'm thrilled about the upgrade and can't wait for it to arrive.

  • The BIGGEST advantage of the 27" monitor is how compact it is

That's right, this monitor is WAAAAAY better than a 30" monitor because it is so compact. Now, it isn't quite as good as my 22" monitor because my monitor is even MORE compact but still, not a bad effort Apple! Hopefully next year you will figure out how to make it even more compact and come out with a 26" monitor.

Oh brother, I couldn't even make this stuff up. Thanks Apple zealots for coming up with the funniest reasons why Apple products are better!

@NonZealot - And let's not forget how much clearer the glossy screen is - MUCH clearer than an anti-glare screen.

Despite the fact that the screen acts like a mirror unless you're sitting in a dark room wearing a black balaclava with a black curtain behind you, it's a beautiful screen!

Give me a break. I've seen the new 27" screen - it really is gorgeous, but no more so than screens from a variety of other vendors - most of whom offer an anti-glare option that means you can see 99% of the screen quality 100% of the time rather than Apple's 80% of the quality 100% of the time.

Your argument is flawed. 27" is kind of like the iron peak of monitor sizes. Anything larger is too bulky to be better and anything smaller the quality will degrade. At least I think that was the company line.

      @NonZealot

Who claimed it was 'compact?'

I think you did make this up, as you so often do.

By the way, still waiting for you to prove your claim that 96.2% of all Mac users install Windows, or your more recent claim that most iPad users install VNC to link to Windows machines.

Wow, you paid over $1,000 to upgrade to get around 3 more inches of monitor real estate???? I have the same Dell 24inch you have and it is spectacular!

    I guess there's a sucker born a minute!

I use Dell computers at work, and my work laptop is also a Dell. The Dell 24" monitor is nice, but the display seems crisper on the Apple monitors. Whether it is worth the extra money is a personal decision.

I hate the fact Apple has decided to place glass screen across the board on it's computers and displays. The glare is not only distracting it's actually very annoying.

I was really happy when they offered an antiglare option on the MacBook Pro's (which I purchased). But the fact that there is no option for an antiglare iMac or Cinema display means I will not be purchasing either of these products for myself.

Got mine last week and returned it in two days because I had a defective unit and now I have to wait 9 more days to get my new one, Wish that Apple checks their displays before it leaves the factory or at least give me loaner until the new one arrives
