IE9 FAQ: how to install, uninstall, and tweak the IE9 RC

By | February 10, 2011, 11:16am PST

Summary: This morning, Microsoft officially made the long-awaited Release Candidate build of Internet Explorer 9 available to the general public. As usual, my inbox is overflowing with questions. Can I install over the beta? Do I choose 32- or 64-bit? No spell checker? I’ve got these answers many more.

Update: Now that Microsoft has released the final version of IE9, this FAQ is out of date. Please see the expanded and updated IE9 FAQ: How to install, uninstall and tweak the final release of IE9

This morning, Microsoft officially made the long-awaited Release Candidate build of Internet Explorer 9 available to the general public. As usual, my inbox is overflowing with questions. Here are the answers.

How is the Release Candidate different from the beta?

I’ve published a write-up that covers the important differences: IE9 Release Candidate review: will Microsoft’s big browser bet pay off? For an overview of the differences between IE8 and IE9, see my earlier review of the IE9 beta: Internet Explorer 9 beta review: Microsoft reinvents the browser . Microsoft has an official document listing new features in the RC, which is available in both PDF and XPS formats here .

Will there be additional changes in the final release?

In terms of features or the user interface, no. What you see in the RC is what you will get in the final release. As for when it’s ready, Microsoft isn’t talking, but the smart money says it will be on or around the MIX conference in April.

I’m running Windows XP. Can I install IE9?

No. XP is officially out of the mainstream support phase and is not eligible for updates like this. Plus, many of its features are specifically tied to Windows features found only in later versions.

Where can I download the release candidate code?

Direct download links are here: http://www.beautyoftheweb.com/#/download

You’ll find separate versions for 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) Windows.

Should I install the x86 or x64 versions?

You should choose the installer that matches your version of Windows. The setup program installs a 32-bit version of IE9 and makes that the default choice when you launch IE. If you’re running 64-bit Windows, use the 64-bit installer. It installs the 32-bit IE code and also installs the 64-bit version. Even on 64-bit Windows, IE makes the 32-bit version of IE the default. For most users, that’s the correct configuration. The 32-bit browser is preferable, primarily because most add-ins aren’t available in 64-bit versions yet.

Can I install over the IE9 beta?

Yes, that is a fully supported installation scenario. You don’t have to uninstall the beta. If you were running any interim builds, however, I strongly recommend uninstalling those builds first.

How do I uninstall IE9? It’s not in the list of installed programs.

That’s because it’s considered an update to Windows, not a program. To find the uninstall link, open Control Panel, got to Programs and Features, and click View Installed Updates. (You can also type Installed Updates in the Start menu search box to find a direct link.) Scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section, select the Windows Internet Explorer 9 Release Candidate link, and click Uninstall.

Can IE9 coexist on a PC with earlier versions of IE?

No, unless you use virtualization software to run the other IE version in a separate virtual machine.

"Are there any Tracking Protection lists available from third parties?

According to Microsoft, Abine , TRUSTe , PrivacyChoice , and AdBlock Plus have committed to developing TPLs. I?ll take a closer look as they appear."

Does that mean there will be an official adblock plus addon for IE9?

Why would AdBlock Plus do this? Why would they potentially pay a M$ tax in order to use it in IE9?

And why would M$ allow something that would potentially block their own ads? Like here on zdnet?

Remember that "tracking protection" is not the same as "visual ad blocking".
Highly unlikely there'll be an official add-on. I reckon it'll be much like the .xml files you imported to IPF in IE8.

What possible reason does MS have not to include a basic tool such as the spell checker. In this day and age? Seriously.

The same argument was made about the web browser and look how well it protected them.

Do you have any proof of this?
LTV10 13th Feb 2011
As far as having a built-in spell checker is concerned?
@RSVR85:
Try ieSpell, which is free, sits neatly (the usual abc/check icon) in the command bar, and works.
Any way to tweak how Gmail is rendered on IE9 RC? As of now it is a mess!
@crystalsoldier It looks okay for me. Make sure compatibility mode isn't enabled for that site; I found that I had to enable compatibility mode for the beta to make certain pages render correctly, but with the RC those pages don't look right until I disable it.
@ParrotHead_FL

Hi...Thanks. I tried that but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. I also reinstalled the Beta version to see if the problem appears there, but not so. This is an RC-specific issue and a few folks have been reporting this on various forum.

Running RC on two different pc's, both Win7 64....
Looks and runs great on both.........
What is messing up on the render?
@crystalsoldier
Hi Crystalsoldier...I had the same problem and it was really annoying. I activated the menu bar and then from "tools" I clicked on "compatability view" while on the gmail page. That does the trick.

Tracking protection lists
IE9 10th Feb 2011
The list can be found here:
ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Browser/TrackingProtectionLists/Default.html
Sorry for my rant, but how unimportant is a spell checker for Microsoft.
@Classic94
I find it more annoying becuase they give no valid reason behind it. If they said; ok, we don't ship IE with a spell checker because X, Y, Z. Then i'd be more accepting.
@RSVR85

To reiterate the obvious, yes, MS's ommision of a spell check in what is arguably a modern browser is mystifying!!!!
Or maybe they're just too dumb and couldn't get it to work.

lol..

No ad-blocker, game over.
techvet 10th Feb 2011
What's a *good* ad-blocker for IE8 or IE9? Does it exist?
@techvet

simple adblock(free) has worked well,for me in IE8.
shows here there's one for IE9..haven't tried it:

@knash1
Yes, it works well in IE9, also.
Ad-Block pro works as well as AdBlock Plus for FF, but it costs. You could also try something like Privoxy that's free. It is a proxy server that runs on your local machine. You can block ads with it but it can do a lot of other stuff for you privacy wise.

Are there any known compatibility
problems with any Windows software or programs,
with IE9 installed?
@knash1

The only problem I had, or I should say was mentioned, but I don't remember it affecting me, was MagicJack stated that it would not work with the IE9 beta, otherwise I didn't hear of any compatibility issues.
@knash1
Not specifically but I am finding RC with the latest Flash has some issues on flash intensive sites or games - causing key/click lag .....

Tweak? No!!!
The Star King 11th Feb 2011
In the post PC world, people do not want to tweak anything. They do not want to (un)install manually. They want an app store where they can download new apps, remove them, or update them. They do not want to be confronted with a dialog box like the one shown in your article. I'm afraid this shows everything that's wrong with windows
@The Star King

If you don't like it get a smart phone, that's how most OSs work. So what you are saying is you want no options, just a black box browser? That's a horrible design mechanism for a desktop OS.

@The Star King
I disagree. I think your comment shows everything that's wrong with smartphones.

I let my Droid die partly because of this. Even after I rooted it, it wasn't nearly as configurable as I wanted it, and I decided that it just wasn't worth the money.

Some of us do want to tweak, adjust, and even break stuff, just because.

And just what IS the "post-PC world", anyway? I'd think that a smartphone is the most P of all the Cs.
A problem with pinned site.

I pinned GMail, but from the pinned IE window, I can't login to my GMail acccount and Google Apps mail account at the same time, sometime loging into one logs out the already logged acccount, sometimes an error message is shown.

No such problem with normal IE windows, but I hopped to pin GMail, but will not be able to do so.
@rdsm

I think that's a goiogle thing. If i am logged into gmail via thunderbird I can't log into igoogle. For some reason Google isn't allowing multi-login on the same machine, lame.
@KBot

It should not be a google issue, recently google has allowed login to multiple google accounts, including Google Apps accoutns, from single browser session. You CAN login to multiple google accounts on IE, Mozila, Chrome. Its only not working when I pinned GMail in IE9, otherwise it works. Its something to do with how pinned sites handle cookies.

The best feature of IE9...
LTV10 11th Feb 2011
...is the uninstall option. In case I want to get this dreck off my machine.
I used the beta and I switched to the RC as soon as I read your last IE9 report. I love the pin option and I hope people utilize the option menu functionality of the pin option. MS is stepping up their game, and this is coming from a loyal Firefox user. I have no plans on dropping Firefox, but for the websited I frequent most at home that can benefit from IE9, I'm definately using it. The beta had facebook notifications show up in the pinned icon on the task bar, I never remembered that in firefox.
I have a friend who installed an ie9 beta. He swears it is NOT LISTED as uninstallable .. anywhere .. in UPDATES or anywhere else. He would LOVE to uninstall it. Hoping updating to RC would make it appear in the list of uninstallable UPDATES, he went for RC. Claims STILL does not appear as uninstallable. It is just not on the list. I would like to see that for myself . but it is not possible. I have found a few others on the 'Net claiming the same thing. Of course everyone tells him to 'Look in Updates'.
@WacoJohn
I had the same problem. An earlier IE9 conflicted with Roxio and disabled the program entirely. When I realized the conflict, I tried to uninstall IE9, but it wasn't listed on the Installed Updates or on Installed Programs. After a Google search and looking at lots of results, I found a command prompt (C:) command which removed IE9. Afterwards, I just reinstalled IE8 and Roxio. I've had no problems since.

It's there
Ed Bott 12th Feb 2011
@WacoJohn

It is installed as a standard Windows Update package. All such packages are available in Installed Updates. Because it is listed as Windows Internet Explorer, he might just not be seeing it.
Pinning is worthless if pinned sites won't use installed plugins. So, for example, pinning Gmail seems nice until you can't use IE spell. I have looked pretty hard and can find no compelling reasons to use IE 9 vs Firefox.
IE9 RC was a bit more snappier on my old single core processor with 1 Gig of RAM running Windows 7. The only thing I didn't like about the beta was it being a bit sluggish on my machine but tossed it up to me running with sub-standard hardware....yes...even the video on my box is crap....64MB non-3D integrated crap. But now I can surf like a pro again.....thank you Microsoft!
autorun would not work after installing ie9
I started installing the RC from the download link. My AVG antivirus identified it as malware. Hmmmmm.
...And how do i get the menubar on top??? I have used ie9tweaker to get it on top for the ie9 beta, but it doesn't doesn't seem to work in ie9 RC!

Seriously!
escapepod 12th Feb 2011
Seriously... what were you doing in grade school instead of learning how to spell? .... Seriously - why does everyone need a spellchecker?
It messed up my ability to open attachments as I
normally do in MSN Explorer. I'll try it again
later.
Well,
I just installed IE9 on my laptop for testing. Seems quick and has a nice layout. I will test it with my favorite sites and see how it works. Someone mentioned on here that you can pick up spyware on Mozilla Firefox and other browsers. That is true. I run Firefox as my main browser, I had an attempted attack off google just on New Years Day. It was a picture on the first page of google, when I clicked on it the browser closed and the temp file it created tried to get me to install a malicious application. No matter what browser you use, you just have to be careful.
Is there a way to get rid of all the little down pointing arrows on the bookmarks tool bar? Just the fact that file folder icons are present is enough to know that multiple choices are available the arrows just waste space.

I have used IE9 from past 4 days and I feel that its the best IE browser launched by microsoft.

Its very light and fast. Hope you will also get similar experience at your end.
