The deal, valued at $142 million, gives Salesforce.com a Wikipedia-like business contact system. Salesforce.com said it plans to combine its CRM applications with Jigsaw's cloud model for collecting business contact data.

Ultimately, Salesforce.com will partner with companies like Dun & Bradstreet, Hoover's and others to build out data. Salesforce.com said in a statement that the acquisition marks its "entry into the $3 billion cloud-based data services market."

In the Jigsaw model, community members cleanse the data and accumulate points for maintaining quality information. Jigsaw has more than 1.2 million members.
