Dell plays the part of Scrooge with Venue Pro delays

By | December 14, 2010, 7:23am PST

Summary: The Dell Venue Pro delivery date keeps getting pushed back and the few that were available at Microsoft Stores have experienced major issues. Will Dell ever deliver the Venue Pro or is the device DOA?

Today is 14 December and I expected to have already received a shipping notice with delivery originally scheduled for tomorrow for my Dell Venue Pro. However, visiting the Dell website to check my account now shows that the order is “in production” (which it has since day one) with a new estimated delivery date of 6 January 2011. I am beginning to wonder if the Dell Venue Pro is a device that looks better on paper than in actuality and think I will go ahead and cancel my order and keep my HTC HD7 as my WP7 device.

Buyers could pick up the Dell Venue Pro back on Windows Phone 7 launch day on 8 November at local Microsoft Store locations. However, I understand from those who purchased them that there were issues with the device and many of these people returned them. The problems with the hardware are documented in this Dell Venue Pro support forum. There were issues with the SIM card, WiFi radio, and more.

I used to buy Dell Axim Pocket PCs and understand that Dell shipping estimates are never very accurate with them usually delivery before the date they state on the website. We are now a month and a half past the first date of availability of the device and it will be two months past launch day before the first orders from the website are scheduled for delivery. This tells me there are some major issues with the device and I am not willing to play the beta test game with this device for $500 given that the HD7 is a fine alternative and I am sure we will see more about WP7 devices at CES in a couple of weeks. How come Dell is having so many issues while HTC, Samsung, and LG are able to get Windows Phone 7 devices out and into the hands of buyers?

Anyone else throwing in the towel with the Dell Venue Pro?

I have been waiting very patiently for this phone to launch. I immediately ordered one on Dec 1 because I had already paid VZ for another month of service. Then I see that Dell was not even shipping the Venue Pro till December 9 which meant I would not get my phone till Dec 17. Still no problem because I?d have a few days before I?d have to make another payment to Verizon.

I had a suspicion that the phone was gonna be delayed because it had not shipped and was due this Friday and when I woke this morning my suspicions were confirmed when I saw a message from Dell stating the following:

?Dear Customer,
We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with one or more items in your order.

Based on the latest available information, we have adjusted the Estimated Delivery Date and are confident your order will be delivered on or before 01/10/2011

We are sorry for the delay and appreciate your patience.?

I hate to be a d*ck but I?ve been waiting for this phone for entirely too long so I think I deserve to be a little upset. But I assume the delay is addressing a problem with the phone so it makes me feel better but still it makes Dell look bad.

I agree with the last commentor. I too ordered my phones on 12/1, one of which was supposed to be a Christmas present for my daughter, can Dell delay Christmas so I don't look like a butthole to my daughter?
@hermanwalton Did you lie to your daughter and tell her you were santa? ;o) I doubt she needs such an expensive phone anyway, unless she is 20 or older. Get her a free phone, with no text, no facebook, and maybe compliment it with a kindle.

@x21x Oh I'm sorry, I though I lived in America! And sorry my daughter is not the typical stupid 15 year old that just wants a regular phone (or iPhone for that matter), her current phone is a Blackberry Curve and she ASKED for a Dell Venu Pro for Christmas after seeing it in action on YouTube. Go back to Russia, or the White House, which ever works better for your form of socialism.

Although my HD7 is fine (and love the OS - as I want a phone that is a phone and access to my e-mail - thats it), the Q keyboard was a nice enhancement and I thought the gorilla glass would be better. So I ordered my phone Friday 12/4, when it said the ship date was 12/17. It was a great price using the AAA discount (10% and then another 10%). When they confirmed the order on 12/7, it said 12/28. As my 30 day T-Mobile refund period is over Friday, I would either need to take it back and revert to my old phone for a couple of weeks, or chuck it. Seeing that MM is now hearing January, I give up. I just checked the order status page and it has not changed, but I too, now have no confidence the phone will perform as promised. Plus, between the hassle of placing the order, and cancelling, I can't fathom having to deal with Dell to replace it under the warranty period if something goes wrong. For anyone else wanting to cancel, call 800- 308-3355 and push the sales option. This should save you from the royal run around I just experienced. I am using my third dell computer for my business but after the entire experience (having just found out they no longer support the XPS One computer I purchased 4/08 wanted to order a new blue tooth keyboard and mouse but not available). Thus, I am done with Dell unless I buy the product at Costco so I can dump it on their return desk if it does not work out. Otherwise, forget it. Now, if I could just find a way to keep the HD7 glass smudge free!
