Will we ever see a SlingPlayer Mobile client for the iPhone?

Will we ever see a SlingPlayer Mobile client for the iPhone?

Summary: Sling Media showed off a version of SlingPlayer running on an iPhone just about a year ago and we still do not have a SlingPlayer Mobile client available to install. At first The Boy Genius Report stated that AT&T may have asked Apple to reject the application, but their sources then stated that Sling has not yet heard anything from Apple. So at this time, there still may be a SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone application coming down the pike. There has also been a bit of controversy surrounding the news that SlingPlayer on the iPhone will only work with the latest and greatest Slingbox products so many people will have to upgrade their Slingbox just to use the mobile application.

There has also been a bit of controversy surrounding the news that SlingPlayer on the iPhone will only work with the latest and greatest Slingbox products so many people will have to upgrade their Slingbox just to use the mobile application.

With the recent network issues AT&T has been having, such as their failure at South by Southwest, it does seem to make sense that AT&T would be worried about millions of people streaming video content over their 3G network to their iPhones.

You can always use the Windows Mobile or BlackBerry SlingPlayer Mobile clients with your home Slingbox device if you don't want to wait and see if an iPhone application is ever released.

I have an original Slingbox Classic, but have moved onto a Hava player because of their FREE mobile clients for S60, Windows Mobile, and Nokia Internet Tablets. I have way too many mobile phones to buy several copies of the SlingPlayer Mobile client, even if the quality and functions may be better than my Hava. I understand that Hava is also working on Android and iPhone applications so I may never upgrade or go back to using my Slingbox.

  • What AT&T Issues?

At some stupid conference nobody heard of until this
year? (South by Southwest) The only ones complaining
were the "bloggers", a bunch who just like to complain
and are really not important anywhere but their own
    minds.

Around here (PA/NJ/NY) AT&T is fine and works great
for me. No network issues since the very beginning of
the iPhone 3G - just good working conditions. Better
than Verizon (I have both) and nowhere near as bad as
    some would say.

    • SXSW is hardly a conference "nobody heard of until this year."

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_by_Southwest

"SXSW is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 1,400 performers playing dozens of venues around Austin over four days, in March. Though it is an industry-based event, SXSW Music links locally with events such as the annual Austin Music Awards show. SXSW is the highest revenue-producing special event for the Austin economy, with an estimated economic impact of at least $110 million in 2008. [1][2][3]

In 1994, SXSW added film and interactive conferences. SXSW Film has become one of the world's premiere film festivals, focusing on new directing talent. Similarly, SXSW Interactive has attracted a strong following among web creators and entrepreneurs. SXSW Interactive's focus on emerging technology has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. Twitter launched at SXSW Interactive in 2007.

The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to nearly 12,000 registrants. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events attract approximately 11,000 registrants to Austin every March.[4]"

This is like saying nobody ever heard of MacWorld until Steve Jobs got sick.

  • No way!

No way! Sling would cut into iTunes tv show sales. I expect that apple is activly working to prevent any sling client from working.

They already have it for the Palm, which I use all the time. Why not the iPhone.
