Facebook Timeline lets you see who has unfriended you

By | September 24, 2011, 12:05pm PDT

Summary: Facebook lets you know every time you make a new friend on the social network, but it doesn’t tell you when you lose one. The new Facebook Timeline feature lets you figure that out.

Update: Facebook has disabled this new feature, which was clearly not supposed to be there. “It’s been fixed now,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. The original article is below.

Currently, Facebook does not notify you when someone unfriends you on the social network. That may soon change with the upcoming Facebook Timeline feature, which will be replacing your current Facebook profile.

Unless Facebook changes this, you can actually see who has unfriended you during any point in time you’ve been on the social network. Here’s how (via BuzzFeed):

  1. Get the new Facebook Timeline feature. There’s an official way and an unofficial way.
  2. Choose a prior year on your Facebook Timeline and click on the number of friends you connected with that year in the Friends box.
  3. Click on the “Made x New Friends” list – anyone with an Add Friend link next to their name either unfriended you, or you unfriended them.

If this is too much for you, stop now. If you can’t get enough, repeat steps 2 and 3 with another year.

The Facebook Timeline feature is currently in beta, so it’s very possible that Facebook will change how this feature works. It would not be very hard for the social network to only list people you are still Facebook friends with.

I’ve asked Facebook about this little tidbit and will update this article if I hear back. I bet this is one of the things Palo Alto will want to consider tweaking before it rolls out the Timeline to everyone.

There's an add-on called Social Fixer (that works with Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera 11 & Greasemonkey (not w/IE though), and it has a feature called "Friend Tracker" that automatically tracks when friends "un-friend" or "re-friend" you. I've been using it with Safari for about a month now without any issue and had a friend de-friend and then re-friend me and it showed up. Here's the link: http://socialfixer.com/

I believe this "feature" has already been removed. I couldn't see this way any "new friend" who wouldn't be a friend anymore. But if you go to "Activity Log" (click on View Activity in the summary) and select "friends" from a dropdown list, you might see date headers i.e. "21 September" one after another without any entry inbetween. That means there was someone who doesn't figure in your friend list anymore.

Maybe you can also ask Facebook why the Timeline Map (the map of all of your posts, checkins, photos, etc) is visible to the public - regardless of how much you lockdown your profile.

Give it a try:
1. Go to your Timeline
2. Click on the settings dropdown (just below the lower right corner of your cover.
3. Select "View as..."
4. When the View As page loads, click the "public" link in the "This is how your timeline looks to you..." box above your cover.
5. Notice the map is visible to everyone
6. Try to figure out how to hide the map from the public
7. Panic and realize that every criminal in the world will now know when you are away from home.
8. Switch to Google+
@hdhshal If you look sharp, you might be able to figure out three things:
1. The map link has a number of mapped items next to it.
2. That number goes away when in "public mode". It still shows the map centered somewhere (where you live? I'm not that paranoid, haven't hidden that info and won't try).
3. When you click the map, the timeline will reload instead of showing a map.

No rational need for steps 5-7, but feel free with #8...
