Panasonic Toughbook CF-W5
Ruggedised notebooks are generally larger and heavier than their regular counterparts — an inevitable consequence of designing a strong chassis that's resistant to incursion from water, dust and other materials, and protecting key internal components. Panasonic’s ultraportable <a href="http://www.toughbook.eu/ENG/notebook_cf-w5.aspx">Toughbook CF-W5</a> is what the company calls a '<a href="http://www.toughbook.eu/ENG/semi_ruggedized.aspx">semi-ruggedised</a>' system. It won’t stand being trodden on, but the hard drive and the display should cope with 30cm drops, while the magnesium-thickened chassis offers a generally high level of protection. Meanwhile, heat is dissipated through the case using heat pipes rather than air vents, offering some protection against dust and dirt incursion.

Toshiba's TLP-XD2000U LCD Projector
Here are a view different angles of Toshiba's new $849 TLP-XD2000U LCD projector. It's not the cheapest in its class (2000 lumens, up to 1024x768 resolution), but it's still a pretty good value. In other words, not the most expensive. Always check the cost of consumables (in this case the bulbs) before buying products that consume things (including printers).

Windows Vista's Firewall offers false sense of security
Now, with Microsoft Windows Vista in the market, it is a good time to start looking at its resilience to people and code that would just assume do your system harm. In Windows Vista, Microsoft's built in firewall took a step forward from the one offered in Windows XP by offering outbound blocking. But does it get the job done? Not quite. For David Berlind's write-up on Vista's inadequate personal firewall, see his blog post post in ZDNet's TestBed blog.

LG Super Multi Blue GBW-H10N
Although the <a href="http://www.blu-raydisc.com/">Blu-ray</a> versus <a href="http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/">HD-DVD</a> format wars have yet to reach a conclusion, business users are likely to find the Blu-ray format more attractive due to its higher capacity: a single-layer Blu-ray disc stores 25GB, compared to 15GB for HD-DVD. The <a href="http://uk.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=050204&categoryId=050204&parentId=0502&modelCodeDisplay=GBWH10N&model=NOTHING">Super Multi Blue GBW-H10N</a> internal Blu-ray disc rewriter from LG Electronics is a multi-format drive that will write Blu-ray discs at up to 4x (143.9Mbps) as well as writing and reading all of the DVD and CD formats. Dual format Blu-ray/HD-DVD drives may well appear in future, but the GBW-H10N is Blu-ray only.
