Firefox Mobile version 1.0 now available for the Nokia N900

Firefox Mobile version 1.0 now available for the Nokia N900

As I stated in my Nokia N900 review the Nokia N900 has the best web browser of any mobile phone. This statement was made about the default web browser and now we have a final version of an alternative web browser that works amazingly well. Firefox for Mobile version 1.0 is now available for the Nokia N900 and if you have a N900 I highly recommend you download and install it now. It is a free web browser with the very compelling Weave Sync support to keep your Firefox experience synced across multiple computers.

Image Gallery: A look at the Nokia N900 Maemo 5 device after two months of use

The Nokia N900 is now available from various US retailers and after two full months of using a loaner device I just purchased my own. This latest Linux-based device has a new version of the Maemo OS and integrates a cellular radio. You will find some aspects of S60 in the N900, along with a rather unique user interface and extremely powerful Mozilla-based web browser. Apps are still early in development, but with the browser you can do most everything you need to do with dedicated apps.

Review: Nokia N900 shows there's a web browser for that

Review: Nokia N900 shows there's a web browser for that

I've written a couple of times here on the blog about the fact that I have been using an evaluation Nokia N900 since October with my loan period expiring in January. I have been focusing on writing up a TON of posts as I created the Definitive Nokia N900 Guide to give my Nokia Experts readers all the details on this extremely powerful device. As a Christmas present to you kind readers here on my ZDNet blog I decided to also post a full review of the Nokia N900 for you all to unwrap and enjoy. You may want to start with my image gallery, move down to my video, and then read the details about my experiences with the device. At the very end of this review you will find out exactly what I think of the device after using it quite heavily these past two months.

Who needs an Office app? Google Docs, Calendar & more all work on Nokia N900

Who needs an Office app? Google Docs, Calendar & more all work on Nokia N900

I have had a Nokia N900 for about a month now (see my in-depth coverage) and have concluded that it is a great compact mobile computer, but needs some more work to be a really good cell phone. If mobile data is your focus, then the N900 is a device to consider and one question I have received quite a bit is whether or not Google Docs and other Google services were supported on the N900. The web browser on the N900 is the BEST of any mobile device when it comes to giving you a full desktop experience and as you can see in my video below Google Documents, Calendar, Google Wave, and more all work just fine on the Nokia N900.

Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Smartphones

Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Smartphones

The lineup of cell phones has expanded a bit, but a significant number of what we see in that category are updates to existing models. The real innovation in the mobile phone world is in the area of smartphones where we see the Apple iPhone, Palm WebOS, Google Android, RIM BlackBerry, and Microsoft Windows Mobile devices taking us to places we have never been before. This holiday season there is a huge selection for you to choose from on every carrier and several exciting devices will be launching throughout November. There are so many to choose from that we can't cover them all here so I will present you with one smartphone from each carrier and one SIM-unlocked one.

Mozilla Fennec browser released in pre-alpha form for Windows Mobile

Mozilla Fennec browser released in pre-alpha form for Windows Mobile

One of the weakest features of Windows Mobile is the current web browser, Internet Explorer Mobile. There are several better alternatives such as the fantastic Opera Mobile 9.5 for Windows Mobile that is included on some devices as the default browser and the Skyfire proxy browser (I can watch Hulu.com with this browser). There has been talk for quite some time about Mozilla entering the Windows Mobile space and as reported by WMExperts.com the Fennec browser is now available in very early pre-alpha form (aka milestone release) to try on HTC Touch Pro devices. Make sure you have a backup of your device and are willing to risk a hard reset before trying this software out as it is very early in the development cycle and not that stable.

Mobile Firefox (aka Fennec) beta 1 now available for testing

Mobile Firefox (aka Fennec) beta 1 now available for testing

The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet is a fun device to tinker with and is a slick piece of hardware. I tried running the alpha version of the Mozilla Fennec browser on it a couple of months ago and it was extremely slow and virtually useless. I just read over on Brighthand that the Beta 1 version of Fennec was released for the N810 running OS2008 so I headed on over and immediately downloaded it. This is the first beta release of a mobile version of Firefox and looks much more promising than the earlier alpha version I tried. You can see it running in the video below.

Aren't the Nokia N800/N810 devices dead simple web tablets?

Aren't the Nokia N800/N810 devices dead simple web tablets?

Michael Arrington's post on creating a cheap web tablet is generating a lot of discussion on the internet and as a mobile enthusiast I wanted to add some of my thoughts to the discussion. There is a device available now that has dropped down as low as US$299.99 recently that runs an excellent Mozilla-based browser and has much more functionality than Arrington is asking for. If you took out the GPS receiver and maybe even the keyboard from the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet Nokia could probably produce one for around US$200. Actually, the Nokia N800 model can be upgraded to the latest Tablet OS 2008 and that is available for just around US$200 so that may be a good alternative that is already available.
