T-Mobile USA to soon launch the Motorola CLIQ Android device

T-Mobile USA to soon launch the Motorola CLIQ Android device

I briefly tried the myTouch 3G and then went and bought the T-Mobile Touch Pro2 thinking these would be the best T-Mobile USA 3G smartphones for a while. We then saw the Nokia N900 announced with support for T-Mobile's 1700 MHz 3G network and I preordered one for myself. Today at the Mobilize 09 conference we heard from Motorola that the CLIQ will be coming to T-Mobile USA this Fall so we will get yet another powerful Google Android device and 3G smartphone on T-Mobile. I was thinking Sprint customers were lucky with all of their new devices (Palm Pre and Pixi, HTC Hero, Touch Pro2) and now we are seeing T-Mobile USA having plenty of options for the smartphone fan and as a long-time T-Mobile customer I couldn't be happier.

Faceoff on Facebook: comparing all the official mobile clients

Faceoff on Facebook: comparing all the official mobile clients

Facebook is an extremely popular social networking site that continues to increase in popularity. I personally can hardly stand the web version of Facebook and prefer to use a more efficient mobile version on my smartphones. With the new official Facebook client for Android just being released I decided to create a post that discusses the official Facebook clients (there are 3rd party alternatives in some cases) running on the iPhone, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, Sidekick, and BlackBerry platforms. While there is some slick Facebook integration on the Palm Pre and WebOS, there is not yet any official Facebook client. As you will see in the following comparison, there is one client that is clearly the leader with most all of the others at about the same level of functionality.

Do people want or need social location (SoLo) services?

Do people want or need social location (SoLo) services?

Over the last couple of years, one of Nokia's big focuses has been on social location technology and services and I suppose it is a natural evolution in the usage of GPS technology. There have been a number of services from Nokia such as Vine, Friend View, enhanced Ovi Maps, and now Lifecasting and I have to honestly say I stopped using them after a few attempts because I personally found little value in them and never thought they were worth the hit in battery life to keep the connection and GPS receiver up or intermittently updating. I think the idea sounds great, but how many of us actually wander around the city looking for friends and people to meet up with? If I am going to meet someone then I just call them up and we work out the details of the meetup spot rather than fumble around on a phone (both parties would have to have supported services) trying to find their GPS coordinates on a map. Shoot, we could just use Twitter or text messaging too if I didn't want to talk on the phone.
