HP 'will not lose sleep' over Sun victory
Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Sun Microsystems have been exchanging blows over a customer that abandoned HP's AlphaServer/Tru64 platform for a Sun SPARC and Solaris platform, but a Gartner analyst said the deal is too small to lose sleep over.Sun on Thursday announced that ActewAGL, a Canberra-based provider of electricity, natural gas and water services to 300,000 customers, has switched to its SPARC platform to improve performance and reduce costs.
HP offers Linux-based Centrino laptop
Hewlett-Packard planned on Tuesday in the US to unveil a new Centrino laptop that comes preloaded with SuSE Linux, making it the first major laptop manufacturer to put forth such an offer. The HP Compaq Business Notebook nx5000, which costs US$1,199, has an Intel Pentium M processor and affiliated Centrino wireless technology.
HP patches critical holes in Tru64 Unix
Critical security vulnerabilities in HP's Tru64 Unix operating system were patched on Friday after it was discovered that implementations of IPsec and SSH programs, which carry VPN and secure system command traffic, were vulnerable to attackers.The vulnerabilities are an embarrassment to HP because both were found in vital components of the operating system and both could enable malicious users to either take control of a machine or launch a denial of service attack.
