Smartphone platforms are becoming a two horse Linux race with between the LiMo Foundation and the Open Handset Alliance, which houses the Android mobile operating system.

That's the big takeaway from a report by ABI Research. Among the takeaways:

  • Verizon has given LiMo a big boost.
  • Android (all resources) has traction and the backing of application developers.
  • By 2013, LiMo and Android will help to give Linux 23 percent of the smartphone market to be second behind Symbian globally.

ABI noted that although LiMo and the Open Handset Alliance will dominate other platforms such as Maembo could gain traction as mobile Internet devices take root.
