The number of homes in the UK with access to the internet has risen slightly over the last year to 42 per cent. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show a three per cent rise since last summer. South east England still has the greatest degree of access with 48 per cent of homes connected to the web. The figures also show there is still a huge gulf between the poor and the wealthy. While 80 per cent of high earners have access only 11 per cent of the country's lower earners are hitched-up to the web.
