Appirio expands presence in Japan

The cloud integrator's 500-plus enterprise deployments include big deployments for media company Japan Post and a new social community for real-estate information service NEXT.

One place where cloud integrator Appirio's recent acquisition of TopCoder will be felt the most is in Japan, where the company has tripled its technical and sales presence since 2008 to 45 employees.

As a Platinum Salesforce.com Cloud Alliance Partner, Appirio has handled more than 500 enterprise-scale cloud migration and deployment projects.

Two of its highest profile deals in Japan include a huge Force.com installation for Japan Post and a social community for NEXT, which is a real estate and housing information service provider with more than 4.4 million property listings. The company handled the latter deployment in less than three weeks, calling on members of its CloudSpokes crowdsourced development for assistance.

"We chose Salesforce Communities as the technology platform to help us actualize our idea, and Appirio to bring our innovation to life in a fast, high-quality, impactful way," said Takashi Inoue, president and chief executive at NEXT, in a statement about the project.

Right now, there are roughly 9,100 Japanese developers -- including participants from Tokyo University and Kyoto University -- represented in Appirio's crowdsourced development community. Globally speaking there are more than 600,000 developers, designers and data analytics experts in the CloudSpokes community, according to Appirio's latest count.

Appirio is backed by Sequoia Capital, GGV Capital and General Atlantic. Other high-profile customers include Facebook, Intuit, L'Oreal, McGraw-Hill, NetApp, The Four Seasons and Virgin America.
