Big Switch Networks, a software defined networking player, said it has raised $48.5 million in additional venture capital to expand into verticals such as financial services, government and telecom service providers.
The company has raised $94 million in funding to date.
Meanwhile, Big Switch also named former NetApp CEO Dan Warmenhoven and Gary Morgenthaler, principal of Morgenthaler Ventures, to its board. Big Switch's plan is to use the new funding to expand internationally.
The latest round of funding included existing and new investors including Morgenthaler Ventures, Silver Lake Waterman, Khosla Ventures and Redpoint Ventures.
Big Switch's networking product includes its Big Cloud Fabric and Big Monitoring Fabric. Software defined networking enables data centers to use standard hardware to add switches and control networks. VMware, Cisco, HP, Juniper and a host of others are pursuing software defined networking as a way to upend incumbents or keep existing customers. In addition, traditional networking players are decoupling hardware and software that used to be integrated.
According to Big Switch, the company is seeing increased adoption at carriers and enterprises.
