BT is to offer Cisco virtual storage solutions that highlight unused hard disk space on enterprise networks.

According to the UK telecoms firm, which recently won Cisco's Advanced Technology Partner Accreditation, it is the first company to offer the storage solution in the UK.

The storage solution, based on Cisco's MDS 9000 Series Multilayer SAN Switches, uses intelligent switching to ease storage management by optimising the use of redundant storage space.

A spokesman for BT said: "The idea is that you can make best use of storage resources using spare capacity from other users. It eases storage management."

The Cisco solution has a graphical interface, which displays areas on the network that have not yet been used.

The product was launched in July by Cisco, but BT only received Cisco's accreditation in late September.
